I got a chance to drive the Alturas in heavy and moderate to light traffic. Have to say that I was blown away by the drive. The best engine gearbox combination that I have seen on an SUV in terms of drivability is the Jeep Grand Cherokee ( US version ). With the Alturas, I couldn't find anything to complain with regards to refinement or response to A-pedal inputs. It just does what it is asked to do regardless of the rpm it is in. And I believe it uses a Merc Torque converter which means it is not going to have the reliability problems that the dual clutch transmissions can bring about. So, this seems to be the best of both worlds. Gives extreme driving pleasure and at the same time have a reliable tech as well.

I was part of the Alturas buying decision of my co-worker. We worked out the resale value of the Alturas after 5 years and compared it with Fortuner and figured out that the amount of money lost is almost the same after 5 years. This is also because the price of an Alturas is 6L plus cheaper to a comparable Fortuner model and at the same time provide features which are from the next class. And inspite of the engine looking smaller on specs, the engine gearbox combination makes up for it and gives the best driving experience in that class!

Basically, you get a Merc engine and gearbox in a Mahindra price backed by the support of Mahindra ( which I'll prefer any day over Merc )! This seems to be the most underrated SUV on Indian roads.

PS: My experience is based on driving on urban roads and not off road driving which is what most Fortuner owners do anyway.

A test mule of the Mahindra Alturas G4 has been spotted. It is likely to be testing a BS6 compliant engine.

The test vehicle in the spy images has a SsangYong grille with horizontal slats and a masked badge. The front bumper is different and has a chrome insert. The SUV is running on dual tone alloy wheels.

The Alturas G4 was launched in November 2018. The BS4 version uses a 2.2-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine that produces 178 BHP @ 4,000 rpm and 420 Nm of torque @ 1,600-2,600 rpm. The engine is mated to a Mercedes-sourced 7-speed automatic transmission.

The alloys definitely look much better than the currently available ones. Moreover, IMO, the SSangYong grill configuration looks much better than the Mahindra ones. Not a fan of the added chrome though, and hopefully they would bring a few more shades with the facelift. It would look dope on a shade of dark blue like the Hexa.

No changes in power ratings - still the same 177hp, 420 NM. The Mercedes sourced 7 speed automatic is shown as a big highlight, but Mercedes has moved to the new 9-speed auto long ago, so essentially older gen technology. I know this is not uncommon, we have the Force vehicles using the OM611 engine 20 years after it was phased out by Mercedes.

Hello,
I bought all the listed accessories at Anant Cars itself. At the time of delivery most of the accessories were fitted except the side stepper which they supplied after a few days.

This is a very underrated car its great for what it offers at the price it offers even now. The engine is a was a bit lax in BS4 variant but its still not a bad combo.

It would be heartening to see our first citizen being ferried in a homegrown manfacturer's SUV. Also, a great marketing opportunity for Mahindra.

With Mahindras announcement to pull out of Ssanyyong, does a new or used Alturas make sense anymore?

XUV300 (Tivoli) is still safe as its heavily indeginsed however Alturas may become like Chev Captiva orMitsubishi Outlander.

I guess the repairs and parts availibity on this vehicle might be affected say 2-3 yrs from now when the MM and SY divorce is complete.

This is as much a question as an observation.
