re: SsangYong Rexton (Y400) to be sold as Mahindra Alturas G4 in India

Good exterior. Typical cheesy Mahindra interiors. Too loud and flashy. Should be on road <30 Lakhs for it to move numbers. Anything higher and it would be a dud. What's with the big name at the back. Gosh!!! Don't Mahindra's have any class?

This is a SsangYong product, not something designed by Mahindra.

That "Alturas G4" badge at the back is really awful! Looks like the name plates outside sarkari offices, and about as subtle and tasteful. Anyone know if this is standard or something they just put on for the occasion? (Really hoping it's the latter). Spoiling the looks of what seems to be a terrific vehicle.

Loud, Flashy & Scare the neighbourhood kids is the basic design philosophy of Mahindra. However, there is a gaping hole between the top end Hexa/XUV segment and the 40 plus lakh Endy/Fortuner Segment. If priced aggressively, they can do a Hyundai on the premium SUV segment. Lots of features, and a reasonable price.

SsangyYong and Mahindra seems to be marriage made in heaven. Now they can combine ugliness into a better package

Doesnt seem so bad to me. It looks like what a Pilot or a Highlander would. But this would be little hardcore compared to them. Maybe the interior colours are little bright and similar to Endeavour for the dash layout? This will tell us if Indian makers can play in segments where one has to pay lots of money and is the highest price that one is asking.

I can see dual zone climate control along with ventilated seats apart from electric seat adjustment with memory controls.

If Mahindra can price it well they can pull some buyers from the Endeavour and Fortuner segment

This is high time H7X should make its entry in the media. I am confident, the real killer would be Tatas; undercutting all in the premium SUV segment being more indigenous (less costly), great onlooker (Harrier resemblance), and capable SUV ingredients (Evoque/Discovery platform) than all other including Alturas.

However, Alturas would definitely steal show from likes of Endy, Fortuners etc.

It's always fun to see full blown "test drives & reviews" from the lame automotive media after spending just 1 - 2 hours with the car. Yep, the Alturas preview drives have a small number of hours with the car.

Just our "likes & dislikes" list takes us a cumulative 5 - 6 hours of thinking, discussing & typing.

Picture gallery of the Alturas G4 as posted by ACI. Compared to the exterior that's "bland" the interior looks well "appointed" and luxurious. It all boils down to the pricing.

Re: SsangYong Rexton (Y400) to be sold as Mahindra Alturas G4 in India

Looks like a great truck, and terrific reviews from other parts of the world (esp. UK; its just being introduced in Australia this month, so no full reviews there yet I could find). But if ex-showroom price is going to be around Rs. 30 L, I suspect it may be priced too close to Fortuner/Endeavour to sell well. May be Mahindra just wants the top spec 4WD version to be the image leader and will sell the 2WD at lower price point. Would be a shame though.

Re: SsangYong Rexton (Y400) to be sold as Mahindra Alturas G4 in India

Few sources have pointed out that this will have the same engine/gearbox combo as the international version, which is 2.2L diesel and Mercedes sourced 7 speed gearbox. UK prices for this car is around 34L I don't expect this to be less than 30 Lakhs, even if all the components are localised.

This is a HUGE gamble from Mahindra's side, I expected the car to start where the XUV's price ends, even the features list seems to be almost on par with the international model. Looks like they have their eyes set on fortuner and Endeavour's sale numbers. Hope they can pull this off.

Re: SsangYong Rexton (Y400) to be sold as Mahindra Alturas G4 in India

The UK reviews aren't very flattering btw. But, that could be because tastes differ from market to market. Found this bit quite funny (and sarcastic) :

"Does the Rexton appeal to the mainstream?

Should you buy one? For the road? For the family? No. Cheaper than the opposition it might be, but the seven-seat Kia Sorento is easily worth the premium you pay over the price of the Ssanger. However, it’s worth mentioning that Ssangyong has apparently earned a decent reputation in agricultural circles, and – in a mud-caked equation – it’s a different story."

Re: SsangYong Rexton (Y400) to be sold as Mahindra Alturas G4 in India

This is one Mahindra in which the interior looks better than the exteriors. From the pictures the interiors exude that feeling of quality and luxury. However the exteriors looks bland and in certain angles like the GLS. It's a staid, boring and bland look compared to the vehicles it is going to be competing against. The Harrier, the Jeep Compass, the Tucson etc all look much better than the Alturas.

Given Pininfarina in their group, couldn't they have designed a better set of clothes?

Drive on,
Shibu.
