Re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

Looks like lot of folks want to buy the Thar but expect Mahindra to be charitable. Why put in calculations like engine+turbo+autobox is one lakh more, touchscreen+speakers is 20k more etc? Please understand every manufacturer would have made several studies as to where their product can fit and at what price point will it sell. If the old scorpio still sells @20 lakh on road, there is no practical way will the much more desirable Thar be priced at 13 lakh on road. Also the price has moved north, Kia is selling a pint sized front wheel hatch (sonet) at 16/17 lakh and people are lapping it up. Tata manages a decent increasing number of Harrier sales @25 lakh on road, so why not a 20 lakh Thar?

A small prayer for all the M&M dealers who might get the petrol Automatic as a demo vehicle and need to keep it fueled up.

Thar petrol AT is going to nudge the good old Safari petrol from the top slot in the demo vehicle FE charts. And for this reason, I don't think we the larger public is ever going to get that one for a test drive. Especially here down south!

No Sir they dint have a physical colour palette, i saw as many youtube videos from the launch day as i possibly could. Even the ones in malyali and tamil . The colour looked nice to me hence went with that only. Should get my hands on it before the 14-15 of october as per their guesstimate.

Re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

The original Thar 4wd was 11 lakhs otr in Kerala in 2012, road taxes back then was 6% or so. Adjusted for official inflation figures that's 19 lakhs in 2020. Road taxes are higher today, the vehicle is much more improved and the electronics are modern, the old car didn't have electronics.

25 lakhs for the top end variants is possible, base versions might come in cheaper. The Thar has no real rival, Mahindra would be plain stupid to leave money on the table. Those expecting 10 lakhs otr should check out mahindra first choice for older Thar models.

The Indian media seem to be testing the New Thar quite comprehensively! After the infamous 'Flying Thar', we now get the 'Swimming Thar'

I'm amused at the various pricing predictions. Please expect a less than 15 EX-SHOWROOM for the fully loaded and you won't be disappointed (or awed)!

This is the limit of carelessness.
I think manufacturers and PR agencies need to tighten some loose ends now.
It's high time.
There have been numerous such instances where people have gone overboard as there is no liability associated with it.
Sad to see this happening to a car because of some silly (so called) enthusiast journo

There should be some typing mistake. I got my 2014 CRDe model for 8.6 lakhs OTR in Ahmedabad in 2014.

25 lakhs for the top end variants is possible...
Among the upcoming launches in almost a decade, nothing has pulled the heart strings like the 2020 Thar. This is a very unique offering in the Indian Market and has the potential to become a flagship model for Mahindra ONLY if they can maintain very high standards of vehicle quality and an absolutely hasslefree/nigglefree ownership experience.

Buying a Thar is mostly going to be a heart over head decision for many and it is more of a purpose built "tool" for offroading rather an a practical utilitarian vehicle which will serve transportation or mainstream family needs. It will be mostly bought for the fun factor with limited practical use and by those with moderate to heavy offroad use as a second or third car.

It can't be compared to a Scorpio or a Harrier which have much more practical general usage value with limited beaten roads usage but are not purpose built offroaders.

Manufacturing costs should be be a consideration given that Mahindra can offer a very competent high quality 5 star rated XUV300 at 8.3 Lakh or a 3 row Marazzo at upto 13 Lakh Ex-showroom.

25L is Skoda Octavia territory. Mahindra can only afford to price the Thar at most in the 12 to 16 L OTR range atleast initially.

With the passage of time and if Mahindra can really maintain stellar product quality and continuous improvements and provide a Toyota like niggle free vehicle, then the pricing can definitely be increased gradually over time with no loss of demand.
Also, if the sales trend continues to be good and Thar comes with a long wheelbase version (more practical) with good quality and reliability, then they may be able to command 25L level pricing.

If I am correct, Mahindra personal in one of the interviews mentioned that Thar is placed just under Scorpio. So am not sure from where we are getting the price of 25 lakhs?. The top end Scorpio is just under 16 lakhs ex showroom.

That's because the variant in the video is AX fixed soft top - see the screws on the door frame, in some of the pics posted prior to the video! In my opinion, it looks ghastly. The fitting of the convertible soft top looks classy and more sporty. Which one flaps more at high speeds is yet to be seen

BTW, I like the look of those steel rims and meaty tires, compared to those on the LX. The more I think about it, the more I find AX (with convertible soft top) as a VFM proposition, unless one wants a mall-crawler.

Scorpio top end ex showroom price is at 16.60 Lakhs. On road would be 20.30 Lakhs. Thar will be always positioned below Scorpio, and hence we can safely say that top end LX Thar Hardtop AT will be at 13.5 -14.25 Lakhs ex showroom.

Guys I think we should not quote OTR here as it might unnecessarily confuse several readers as Bangalore has insane taxes.

A 15L OTR in Delhi (favorable) could be a 17-18L OTR (not so favorable) in the southern states. Maybe if we really want to talk about OTR we can also mention the ex-showroom which is what is in the hands of the manufacturers and not the final OTR price which depends on state taxes.
