True.

I would like mahindra to launch the Roxor.
Just strip out the ac, soft top, rear seats, everything useless.

And price cut by a lakh.

There is no denial in what you said and probably that would seem to be the most logical option.

IMHO, Mahindra is just adding the basic essentials which were missing earlier,
1) Hardtop
2) Updated interiors
3) Power window and central locking
4) Getting rid off the rear leafs
5) Better cushioned seats.
But the above will add up some money in the exshowroom price.

I agree that the current design of the Thar is timeless since it Made its entry with CJ5/CJ7 in the 80s globally followed with MM540/550 in the 90s in India and making its way in the form of Thar in 2010 and as Roxor in USA a few years back. Something which has survived for more than 30 years can’t be overturned so easily but then it is said that change is the only constant thing and in today’s world change comes with a price.

Cheers.

That could be one option.

What will be even better is if the following are provided as factory fitted options
. AC
. Power Windows
. Hard Top
. Front-facing seats

and any other goodies that we add. That will be best of both the worlds. Those who want a bare-bones Thar at lower price get it, and those who want luxuries added also get it. Some thing like what Jeep does with Wrangler in the US.

The Roxor will not meet our safety norms. So, will have to be sold as a tractor. Not sure if they will get approval as a tractor or tiller.

A few days back, the first spy images of what appeared to a production-ready Thar had surfaced online. It has been reported that the new model will be larger than the outgoing car. It is expected to get updated styling and a new interior with modern features.

The new Thar is expected to be offered with a 2.0-litre mStallion petrol engine producing 187 BHP and 380 Nm of torque. It could also get a 138 BHP 2.2-litre diesel engine option. Transmission options might include an automatic and a 6-speed manual.

Wow ! 187 BHP and 380 NM !! these are close to Jeep Compass specs

Will it mean a really big jump in price as well ?

I absolutely dread the top spec crossing 18L mark. Hope I am proven wrong.

Current one without ABS, Airbags, hardtop and bare bone interiors was already around 12L.

A lot of sub-4m "SUVs" are also pushing the 15L mark, I don't expect this to be a rupee less.

There maybe a few variants available at different points. Let's see.

Well, among all these pricing concerns - One good news is that BS6 XUV500 variants carry a premium of only Rs 30,000/- over it's BS4 counterparts.

So the 2.2 MHawk BS6 may not cost a bomb under the hood of the Thar also.

Crazy figures really! But the 187 BHP is going to be a petrol motor know? We really need to wait and see how it is going to perform to be honest.

Hope they price this well and do a good job of supporting early customers. Will be interesting to see how they manage to balance styling and interiors with the ruggedness that a Thar is supposed to personify. Hopefully they have done something to fix rusting issues as that has been a pain point for both Thar and TUV customers.

If they are still testing then how can the launch be around the corner. Maybe they launch only a specific variant while the others are still being tested. Let's see what the future holds.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

I doubt that the Thar will get the full monty, i.e., the most powerful engine in the mstallion family, the 2.0. I think that honor will be reserved for the new XUV500. The likely and most appropriate engine for the Thar would be the 1.5 Litre MStallion, with 163 HP and 280NM torque. That by itself will be class leading, putting the Thar over the Nissan Kicks which will have around 154hp and 260NM. It will be more than adequate for any amount of mountain climbing and dune bashing!

I hope there is a lower and cheaper variant of the Thar with the 1.2 mstallion, with 130 hp and 230 nm paired to an MT with a 4WD that comes in under 10 lakhs. Should be adequate power figures that are actually almost on par with the Seltos TGDI. Would be incredible as a daily driver cum off-roader for that occasional trip to the hills.

That's certainly on point and logically makes sense.
