Are you sure? If this is the case, the resulting overall wheel diameter will be different enoug to cause significant variance in indicated speed and actual speed between the two wheels, not to mention differences in odo and gear.

Man! What a beast looking Thar from the showroom! I see a baby Wrangler in every angle.
Wishful thinking: Base model priced at 9.99l Ex-Showroom
Reality: Base model 11.99l Ex-Showroom?

This Thar has mesmerized me to the core. I wish they price it decently for us common folk to think of it as a primary & only car. I don't think they will with a 2.0L Petrol, with the varying tax structures, a 2 liter engine won't be close to being priced under 10 lacs.

I guess yes. Look at a separate cable housing going to the passenger side door. I think that's detachable and the doors are removable. Perhaps not that easily as Wrangler or Bronco has, but still there's the provision. Unscrew from the hinges, detach the cable housing from the doors and you're good to go. Glad they didn't put the speaker housing in doors to make things complex, as aftermarket speaker upgrade for the base versions might get a little cumbersome in that case.

Just a noob question, is the Hard top made of steel, like the rest of the body or is it made of fibre material like you see a lot of mods in the current Thar? If its Fibre hardtop, then Im not really sure about its durability.

What a stunner! I feel the grill looks a tad bit better when it's body coloured. Please forgive the shoddy photoshop job.

Except for that grill, it looks smashing. That baby grill just does not do justice to overall look of this Jeep. Though, with modification to grill itself or other areas in the front, might make it gel well with the front look.

But considering its engine specifications, features (for a Thar), butch looks, the hype and an acceptance that it has received over the last few months by the public, I will not be surprised if top end diesel auto touches 20 lacs on road. At that price, I most probably won't go for it. To fullfill the 'Thar' craving, I'll buy a used one for a quarter of its price, since anyways, it won't be used as the primary car.

Having said that, I must admit that its too early to judge when pricing is'nt out and I haven't sat in or driven this beast.

That grill is a huge let down. The overall front end is actually.

Mahindra had a blank canvas to showcase a brilliant new design in its home market. Separate from aping the Jeep for decades. IMO, they have failed and it has partly to do with the whole US Roxer controversy.

They can add screens and other creature comforts but I think that front end has taken away the entire rugged Jeep aura. Also, what they are going to eventually charge for a diesel AT, it is just not going to be worth it.

I agree. Yes, even I feel front looks too softened.

But looks beautiful. Classic.
And good specs. A 2 door petrol (automatic) Jeep with lockable diffs. Kudos to Mahindra

BTW, Mr. Behram Dhabar, I really wish you were here today to see this.

Well said my friend. A moment of silence and appreciation for the man who made this day also possible. I remember in 2015 when the previous update was launched. We spent hours chatting and hounding him on this forum. He was a true people’s champion.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

The petrol Thar produces 300 Nm of torque from 1250 RPM. That is good for a petrol motor. No wonder they de-tuned it from 190 to 150 BHP. Launching a petrol motor on a heavy SUV is still "going against the odds" as far as our market is concerned. So when you do that, you better do it in style. And 300 Nm at 1250 RPM is as good as it can get from a manufacturer whose expertise is in diesel engines. I hope the NVH has been taken care of and we can hear some praises during the review. Good going Mahindra !! Now, waiting for the initial impressions. I am worried that my financial stability will go for a toss soon.

Swept away by design and macho looks. Great engine options and livable interiors now made the Thar even more aspirational. Overall great effort put by M&M team.

Great to learn that our own Mod Aditya is part of the Freedom Drive.

Looking forward to his inputs.

I do not think all trims come with lockable rear diffs, and I do not think any trim level comes with auto hub-locks.

Does anyone else feel that the front fenders are a little too anaemic, thin? Does look quite disproportionate to the size of the bonnet and grill.

Cheers

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

Liked the design alright but with the pricing I think Mahindra will go the way it did with Alturas G4.

Anand Mahindra has been desperately trying to ramp up the company's image to a premium one since the launch of Xuv 500. However, the only thing that has become premium is their hefty price tags the rest is just cheap plastic.

Shedding off the "tractor-maker" image and transitioning into a premium car manufacturer has been the dilemma for Mahindra. It shouldn't be forgotten that their highest selling models still are the crudely made pickups, bolero, scorpio, thar etc. They have failed multiple times in their quest to go higher up in the luxury segment, starting with Rexton and up till the Alturas.

With the new thar, I feel, Mahindra will once again try and get into the premium segment by pricing it around 20 lacs. But this time, i think, they will succeed primarily because the newer generation buyers are more into interiors, electronics and other gizmos. I dare say that buying a car for them somewhat similar to buying a smartphone. Many will happily buy it thinking that it has the same features as the wrangler but at a fraction of the cost.

Having said that I am sure there are still many like me who have seen International harvester engines in Mahindras and Mahindra 535 tractor engine in the bolero and the Mahindra 605 Arjun tractor engine in the scorpio etc. For us Mahindras are still nothing more than good Indian utility Jugaads. The Thar crde was already way too steeply priced when all it offered was a half a steel box on wheels with an engine and transmission. If Mahindra follows the same pricing formula with the new thar, which apparently has all the bells and whistles, I think it will cost a bomb.

Ps- The most practical and value for money Thar for me is still the DI 4x4.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

The most awaited car launch of the year justifies the wait in every sense. Hope they launch it in the USA with very affordable prices to teach FCA a lesson. I mean except for the grill, what is a trade dress for a car? With that logic, most of the products are in violation of trade dress.
Correct me if I'm wrong. Or is it a form of protectionism?
