Man that thing is going fast! So if we share this with the RTO, would the penalize the THAR driver and the video shooter for driving beyond speed limits on a public road?

So many videos, photos, spyshots but Mahindra is managing to keep the real shape still quite unclear. Well done with the hiding and camouflaging.

The crease and bulge at shoulder in the rear half below the hard top on this upcoming Thar always reminds me of the shoulder of the old gen "true" Land Rover Defender.

Ok i really like how well proportioned the new Thar looks and maybe im overthinking it but it seems more planted on the road.
Is that an air scoop on the bonnet ?

To reply to some of the comments on the thread, the Thar is anything you want it to be.
In my case its my highway cruiser ( i do 500-800kms on the highway per month).
I drive it daily to office in Delhi, its a great city drive with the low torque and general road presence. Fear works well in Delhi
I can off road when i want, use it at the farm.
I goto 5 star hotels in it, the shock and awe of the valet staff is entertainment enough.

I find it funny the Wrangler is seen as the Holy Grail of Jeeps in India and has electronics and modern features. But when the same are being introduced to the Thar it has a negative connotation. Having a jeep shouldn't mean pain and suffering all the time. (Mard ko dard hota hai.. kabhi kabhi)

Looking forward to this New Thar now with a lot of anticipation !

You hit the nail on the head.

You beat me to it. The same thought went through my mind when I read the posts.

The fact of the matter is that members of this forum have modified the current and even the first edition of the Thar including replacing the seats, fixing hard tops central locking and even electric ORVMs. Why? Because all this didn't come as OEM.

No, the spirit of the 'Jeep' was never lost. It's just that the bean counters always call the shots. Much to the despair of the late Behram Dhabhar.

If you read some of his old posts on this forum, you will realise that he would be pleased with the mods being introduced.

Now that M&M are sure there exists a market for the mods the same are in the pipeline.

In this context, could we see the Next Gen Thar introduced this year itself?

According the MD of M&M, the company " ........ will be ready to roll out BS-VI-compliant models, both in gasoline and diesel versions, by the second quarter of the ongoing fiscal, ahead of the April 1, 2020, deadline."

https://www.business-standard.com/ar...0301455_1.html

Given that the current model cannot be sold after 30 September 2019 as it doesn't comply with the safety norms, there will be a gap of six months if the company waits to launch the Next Gen Thar at the Auto Expo 2020.

Does it make sense for the company to wait?

Relax, buddy. When the next-gen Thar is launched, we will take it offroad and tell you how it performs in mud-plugging mode.
Very well said GTO! I somehow feel this Thar will be better looking than the current Thar. It will be safer no doubt and much better to live with on a daily basis. But a part of my heart aches because I love the minimal electronics in the current Thar and that feel of crudeness. But more than that I feel wider track vehicles are painful on the narrow mountain roads where you have very little margin of error when there is an oncoming vehicle.

You are right, The Thar 700 will definitely not have a wider body as it is not feasible technically or financially.

However, The current dashboard and revised steering wheel launched in 2017 I think was designed to accommodate air bags. Because without Air Bags, the vehicle cannot be registered from Oct 2019. So, unless Mahindra is confident that the 700 limited editions models will clear RTO formalities by end of September i.e 4 months !!, I don't think they will launch it without air bags.

From what I know, manufacturers cannot "build" a car w/o an airbag from Oct 2019, but customers can "buy and register"

correct me if i am wrong.

Also the current steering wheel (same as bolero) doesnt work with airbags. The Bolero mule seen recently that had airbags carried a steering wheel same as TUV300 or I guess XUV300.

The last close up pic shows the ABS as well as Driver and Passenger Seat Belt Reminder lights. Is this the Thar 700 or the regular Thar, or the facelift version which will launch next year?

Also, the Steering seems like the current gen steering, not the one from TUV300 which also houses an airbag. How're they going to fit an airbag in this design?

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

As far as I know, the mandatory driver airbag norm comes into effect from July 1 but mandatory speed warning, co driver seatbelt alert warning and ABS rule came into effect earlier this year. So, the Thar's that will be produced post July 1 will need all these additions.

However, this will continue only till October 1 which is when the crash test norms kick in and that will be the end of the current-gen Thar.

Question: Why are there 4 power window switches? Very interesting.

I think there is another version with an inbuilt stereo system and steering wheel controls.
The interiors look very comfy.
Will this finally be able to meet the expectations of our better halves? We'll have to see. But finally something to look forward to.
