I suspect the mileage will be around 8 to 11.
The performance, initially I also thought it was extraordinary. But after comparing the specs, with engine displacement & vehicle weight as base, with the Compass 1.4lit. TC Petrol engine, it looks like just so-so or slightly higher. And this too, if the Thar is launched with the said spec, without toning down the mStallion 2.0lit engine. But yes, if it is compared with a 2.0lit. NA Petrol (from the Elantra), it is much higher.

And the average, what I feel is if it is driven normally/mildly (<1800rpm / without kicking in the turbo), it should deliver more than 12kmpl, but if it is pushed during most of the drive (>2000rpm / with turbo kicked in), it will definitely be less than 8kmpl.

Just for a reference, please find a comparison between the BS4 Diesel Thar, BS6 Diesel Thar, BS6 Petrol Thar, Petrol & Diesel Compass and Petrol Elantra. The values in grey (BS6 Thar) are assumed/derived from the below sites, since the vehicle is not launched yet, and the actual specs are not known to us at this point of time. The 2.0lit. NA Petrol engine specs are given to get a direct displacement comparison to the 2.0lit. TC Petrol engine, which is said to be coming up in Thar.

Please read up about the technology that has gone into the TGDI engine before we compare it with the standard MPFI Engines of the past.

Thanks for sharing that. While M&M has invested in tech and ensured that they have a good product, the reality is that there is always a lot of on-road fine tuning needed to fix niggles and ensure everything is working right. Brand new engine, new transmission, new body makes its a completely new Thar that will hit the road. While that is great news enthusiasts, for prospective buyers - it definitely should be a marker for patience.

Upcoming Thar has been spotted again, new steering wheel and removable roof can be seen clearly in the video. Seems like a mid variant with automatic transmission.

Wonderful! the driver in the video just confirmed that its a Diesel Automatic I was thinking the automatic will be only for Petrol Variants.

My guess is this is a top end version. Couple of things I noticed that point to this:
  • The variant has cruise control clearly visible towards the middle
  • Seems to have dual zone Auto A/C controls

Such features are generally provided in the top end trims by Mahindra.

In the first few seconds, you can hear the distinct "Mahindra" rumble of the Diesel Engine, it is quite loud. Hopefully the sound level inside is lower with good damping on the doors.

Liked the way the chap nicely engaged with the driver and try sneak peeking inside.

May not be. No alloy wheels in this one.

The removable hardtop is for sure. Did anyone notice the blue smoke from the tailpipe when he pulled off.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

seems Mahindra has really upped their game with this one. Looking at the kit, my guess is that the top end diesel AT will be priced between the XUV500 W7 AT and W9 AT . Which would mean a near 20L OTR. This will be a very interesting one to watch.

Ah. AT
And what a relief to realise in the end that the ugly idling rattle of the engine in the video is not from that Thar

Finally, we have some news coming in. AT is good and that too at launch if it happens. Towards the end of the conversation, I heard that it is getting launched this month. We are already halfway through the month, I doubt the timeline as we haven't seen any media news in the last week to 10 days

Super excited

Boy oh boy! Finally an AT offroader which you can drive to your office too. I had made my mind up for the Seltos diesel AT, but first right of refusal for my money will go to M&M now.

I heard the driver saying that it will be launched in the next 2 months, not this month.

It's actually October 2020 - festive season launch now.

Quote:
At the announcement of the company's quarterly results, Dr. Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, Mahindra and Mahindra said that the new generation of the Thar will be launched in early October this year.

While Corona has caused this delay, I also hope this will help Mahindra launch all the drivetrain options at one go- rather than in a staged manner with only the diesel manual launching first - as initially rumoured.
