Nice catch, whatever they offer in the production variant, hope all the 3 doors and front windshield is screwed on air and water tight, like a proper car, and hope they have done away with the exposed hinge on the front doors, and this has a 2 stage opening.

Some positive sign for Thar lovers, Few websites have been publishing the news that the new Thar will be revealed on 15th August, 2020 and the deliveries will start somewhere in October-2020.

Below is the photo published by Rushlane website:

Maybe a previous generation wrangler (2007-2017, codenamed JK)

I know that may of the purist MM540/MM550/Pre 2020 Thar fans must be seething in anger, I really like the new design and it does look way better proportioned than the older models.

Since the old Thar is officially retired and this is supposed to be a new platform, why is Mahindra still sticking to the Jeep grill? They lost out badly in the Roxxor case in the USA. The new front grills for the Roxxor after the case was lost weren't bad at all.

Why can't they use this opportunity to create a unique identity?

I agree to your point, Thar/MM540/MM550 has been a matter of heart over mind for Jeep enthusiasts hence the anger or uncomfortness in seeing the new design is bound to happen. Every Jeep enthusiast(including me) would have wanted M&M to retain the retro look coupled with modern features, comfort and convenience. However, change is the only constant thing in the world and Thar has gone that way only. The new design surely looks modern and years ahead of its predecessor. However, I hope it doesn’t end the Safari and Pajero way where the new upgraded models couldn’t generate the enthusiasm as was done by the Safari Dicor and Pajero SFX models.

The safari and pajero didn't go forward because they didn't get the features or model options like their competition. For example the Scorpio had so many models that it was a hit from rural to urban markets which kept the volume going. And the pajero six again was just too long in the tooth.

This is a modern vehicle which is seemingly loaded with features as per the jeep levels of features. Plus it will have model options to keep the volumes also up. Plus it has no real competition where it stands.

The case was lost based on a patents in the USA and hopefully not applicable in INdia.

After having seen the KUV100, TUV300 (water tank inspired), etc, I would rather that Mahindra refrain from creating a unique identity go with the Wrangler Inspired shape.

I fully agree with the model and features piece. I have owned different models of Safari since 2008 and currently have a 2012 Storme. If I talk about features and driving pleasure, XUV 5OO was miles ahead of Safari on the day of its launch. Later on Tata launched Storme with practically zero difference in terms of features over outgoing Safari other than a better build/interior quality. Safari/ Storme were never a match to the Mahindra Line-up which gets updated regularly with features, facelifts and new models.

I also had a Thar(2014) and the updated model of Thar(2017-18) added a little more due to an upgraded Dash and addition of Mechanical Locker. These updates added a newness and Mahindra was able to milk the 540/550 platform for few more years. Thanks to the new motor vehicle rules that they had to dump the old Thar for a completly new product.

With this New Thar, I am very optimistic after seeing the spy videos and images. Had a chat with my local dealer and they are still clueless about the 15th Aug unveiling. They are even not ready to take any booking amount as they feel that the Thar will be launched in Nov-Dec.

This is one SUV I would love to own, always wanted a 4wd SUV and specially a Jeep. But the Thar lacked creature comforts when I was in search for a family car. This would fit most families and has a strong fan following, wouldn't be surprised if this sells better than most of us expect.

I would go crazy if this is used as a vehicle in Independence Day celebration. A perfect marketing campaign. But doubt it would happen.

I absolutely love the look/shape of upcoming Thar. Those manly alloys along with big fat tyres look so macho! Anxiously waiting for the unveil. As someone mentioned, it looks so similar to Jeep Wrangler.

I just pray Mahindra does not goof up on the pricing part. Although little is known till now about features and all, so will not be fair to talk about pricing. Still, IMO top model diesel automatic should not cross 16/17 lakhs on road.

Press Release:

THE ICONIC MAHINDRA THAR TO BE UNVEILED ON AUGUST 15, 2020 IN AN ALL-NEW AVATAR

Mumbai, August 5, 2020: Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., a part of the $ 19.4 billion Mahindra Group, today announced that the company will take the curtains off the newest version of its much-anticipated SUV, Thar, on the occasion of India’s 74th Independence Day - 15th August, 2020.

The all-new Thar is a quantum leap in Technology, Comfort and Safety features without compromising on the Thar's core promise – legendary off-road capability and its iconic design. This will not only attract the die-hard Thar enthusiasts, but also appeal to all those people who have always wanted to own an iconic vehicle with all the bells and whistles of a contemporary SUV.

Ever since India became a free nation, ‘The Mahindra Classics’ have enabled Indians to explore new terrains and do things that they could never have done before. The Thar has been the flag-bearer of this rich automotive legacy from 2010 and is the purest expression of Mahindra’s DNA. In its all-new avatar, the Thar aims to bring back the pleasure of motoring, providing an exceptional blend of iconic design and unadulterated driving pleasure that few other vehicles can match.

For over seven decades now, The Mahindra Classics have shared a close bond with India’s story and the unveil of the all-new Thar on the momentous occasion of our country’s Independence Day is significant in taking this journey ahead.

The all-new Thar will be unveiled on 15th August, 2020 through a live webcast on the official Mahindra Thar website (www.auto.mahindra.com/suv/thar) and its social media handles.
