re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

A sloping bonnet is the norm now, due to the pedestrian safety.

I doubt you can see the tip of the bonnet, like in the old Thar

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

This is one of the most highly anticipated launches by Mahindra in a while ! The pre-launch information is really promising. I saw in one of the videos that the top end is expected to be a non removable hard top with sunroof !?

Definitely queuing up for this !

The last Mahindra product which I remember had a frenzied buildup was the XUV500....nothing quite generated the same interest level or did I miss something in the years between ?

Any news when the next gen Thar will be finally launched ?
Have been seeing too many spy pics of the car being tested on roads, in various cities. High time they launch the car.

September-October is what Hormazd Sorabjee had mentioned during his live session with Dr. Pawan Goenka.

IMHO - 2020 is not the year for any sort of expectations.

Even established products like the new Creta and City haven't driven the market crazy like they would have done earlier. Customers don't want to visit showrooms, customers don't want to spend big money, and nobody is sure when the situation will improve.

Launching a lifestyle product like Thar into this market will not be a great idea, especially with the higher price tags rumoured for this new generation.

I'm really interested in the Thar - but I'm prepared for the launch to be eventually pushed into 2021, with only the unveils, media previews, pre-bookings etc that might happen this year.

What I also heard from some offroading groups is that they (Mahindra) have been hit by a lot of spare part supply issues due to the pandemic, and some staff falling prey to covid itself, plus the new normal requiring lesser workers in the shifts to maintain distancing. Production rates may not be as high as old-normal times owing to these reasons. There was also some talk going on that regardless of the pandemic effects, Mahindra wanted to iron out most niggles out before the launch and so they delayed it by a few more months to buy time for that.

Diwali seems to be the target date for launch as of now from what I heard. It would be interesting to see the market response for the hiterto-unseen powertrain options for a hardcore offroader like the Thar - namely the diesel automatic and petrol engine options to 'soften' it down for the junta

Hi Guys,

Do you guys think that this version will have the improvements required for this to be the primary car of the household?

I love the thought of having a second car, but practically its not possible in a city like Mumbai with parking issues.

There were some talks of having front facing rear seats in the new Thar, but do note the ingress and egress will be an issue for many folks. The new Thar will still continue to be a 3-door in that sense, so the rear seats have to be reached only by creeping and climbing into that rear cavity and not as directly as a regular 5 door SUV .

Even if it comes with a factory hardtop, lockable boot and some creature comforts, it would work well as a single car only if the owner(s) using will be a couple or a couple with a small kid or two. The old Thar was very uncomfortable in the rear plus suffered from many more aspects including safety, which the new one seems to be addressing, but a few limitations will remain (such as the ingress/egress and headroom) due to the inherent design.

More images: Mahindra Thar with black alloy wheels spied

New spy images of the Mahindra Thar have surfaced online showing the production-spec black alloy wheels.

The test mule seen in these images is fitted with 5-spoke black alloy wheels and has a black hardtop. The Thar will also get a soft top option. The SUV also gets bonnet clamps, grille with vertical slats and circular headlamps similar to the outgoing model.

On the inside, it has a redesigned dashboard with circular air-con vents and a new centre fascia that houses a touchscreen infotainment system.

The Thar could be powered by a 2.0-litre mStallion petrol engine producing 187 BHP and 380 Nm and a 138 BHP 2.2-litre diesel engine. Transmission options might include an automatic and a 6-speed manual. It could also get a diesel AT variant.

Sorry for posting something like this - but it really puts the timeline of the THAR launch in perspective! Hence sharing. Reminded me of the various previous modified clips with Adolf Hitler from Der Untergang related with delays in new car launches.

New thar to be delayed again siting the current health crisis and strong anticipated demand. Says,Veejay Nakra, Mahindra & Mahindra’s Chief Executive Officer. What a paradox !

Full comment here - "We are struggling to manage supplies to ramp up capacity to meet the strong anticipated demand mainly from the rural markets and the footfall at the showrooms has reached 40% and the enquiries at almost 75% compared to the regular times before the last three or four months. We expect the rural scenes and vehicle subscription options to drive sales over the next four months".

For all these modern advancements - Mahindra couldn't prioritize a proper fuel lid lock mechanism?

On the bright side - it's good if owners get down at fuel bunks.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

Mahindra did it with Mojo and now with Thar. People will lose interest when they launch it someday. Even though the product might turn out to be good, the interest might have fizzled out by then to public.

IMO we are so much used to seeing camouflaged THAR spy pics that mahindra should consider camouflage as one of their color options
