re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

Seems like a brilliant overall package.

The grille will have to be replaced with an aftermarket mesh grille or something even slightly nicer looking.

I'm confused about the convertible top being hard top or soft. Pls help me out with this.

Guess this is the first time in history that before the end of one dry day people are waiting for the next one

I would go for the Petrol manual if they had the option. So now it remains to be seen if it's the petrol AT or the diesel MT

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

Mahindra has nailed it. This looks very much a Thar but somehow the nose no longer seems an exact copy of the Jeep Wrangler. The thinner slats seems to have given it a differentiated identity.

The decision to offer the 2 litre turbo petrol, albeit in a de-tuned 150 PS version is bold. They are putting out the best and biggest family jewel here - the largest of the latest MStallion engines in their wardrobe. I am sure this engine will be expensive to make and investments required to be recouped will be massive, so I expect that for once the Petrol variants will be more expensive than the equivalent Diesel variants. Another thing this proves is Diesel is no longer the torque king, when it comes to SUVs - Turbo Petrols have arrived with a bang! The 2.0 L Turbo-petrol has higher torque (320 NM) than 2.2 Litre Turbo-diesel (300 NM)

Across 5 main variants and multiple combination of option packs, I think Mahindra will be able to occupy a wide range of price points. My guess is, pricing will be all the way from 12 lakhs on-road for the base Diesel Manual AX to 18 lakhs for the Petrol Auto LX. A wild guess on pricing
  • Diesel Manual AX - Around 12 lakhs
  • Petrol Manual AX - Around 13 lakhs
  • Diesel Manual LX - Around 15 lakhs
  • Diesel Auto LX - Around 16.5 lakhs
  • Petrol Auto LX - Around 18 Lakhs

It could be something sophisticated and fully automated like what the T-Roc gets in Europe (below), but that is going to be expensive. Or it could have a bit more jugad factor and semi-automatic - i.e, the top portion retracts automatically like a sunroof and sides have to be rolled down separately like windows.

You read my mind. I am sure there will be a custom grills selling as much as the Thar.

Partial website : https://auto.mahindra.com/suv/thar | It's still in progress.

Finally a comfortable Thar ! Absolutely amazing. I think they have moved the price unveil to a later date to see the market reaction in forums like team-bhp as well before taking the plunge.

I don't like the grille too but I suspect it looks much more palatable in real and shoudn't be a deal breaker.

I also found it quite cool that the Chief of Design (Ramkripa Ananthan) was a lady and I think she has done a great job!

The 2.0L is guaranteed but likely a detuned version touching somewhere between 150-160hp at best and will definitely look to spice up the low-end grunt.
As I had correctly predicted, mstallion 2.0L - 150hp. I just want to shout and shout " I TOLD YOU ALL SO!!!"

We all wish it comes with the proper 2.0 L 190 bhp engine. The engine might be tuned for low end performance only, but think about the weird situation of an Octavia being overtaken by THAR. Then the pricing has to be higher than Octavia. So the 2.0L engine, even if it happens, would be a mediocre one to drive and wont inspire any enthusiastic quick overtaking/acceleration drives.

If they give the 2.0L engine, they better give an explosive engine. If they want to give mediocre experience, better they put the 1.5L and at-least save in fuel costs.
Well, the torque from the 2.0L is what they were chasing and i was sure the 1.5L won't make the cut. However, I am tempted to think, the international markets MAY pickup the same engine with a higher output. Anyway, let's wait for the test drives and reviews before taking the call on how powerful the engine really feels.

re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

Things I dislike:
  • The grill. I absolutely don't like it.
  • The rooftop speakers. they couldn't have found a better place to mount them, but come on, I love listening to music. I just don't like someone shouting those directly into my ears.

Things I liked:
  • All the comfort features like touchscreen infotainment and MID and the small things like displaying off-road parameters on the screen.
  • Washable interiors. It's great that you can just hit the muddy fields and not worry about ruining your car.

Having watched Bronco's launch recently I cannot stop myself from comparing the Thar and its variants with the Bronco's. Just wish Mahindra have launched a 5 door version at least in the LX variant.

I'm currently planning to buy a car (not rushing though). So I will wait for honest and long-term reviews to figure out the niggles and then consider it. I just can't trust Tata and Mahindra with their first versions.

This is what everyone all over the world were crying out for, a simple off roader that's still practical and modern enough to use daily. With the estimated price of around 15 lakhs it should be good value. The Wrangler has become too big and too expensive for the hardcore off roaders and if this thing was launched in US it would sell like crazy but they wont allow it, just like they sabotaged the Suzuki Samurai over there.

Looks really clean! except the grill may be, looks a bit thinny. Overall, their effort shows.
Somehow, the posture reminds me more of Scorpio than a Thar, probably due to the similar stubby feel.

Wish they had shortened the front a bit to push the driver cabin slightly forward to free up space at the back. It's similar to the current one (or most SWB Jeeps?) where you sit almost close to the rear wheel.

The ingress/egress for rear passengers is not going to be easy for sure.

What a machine! What a machine!

It's after so long that our market is seeing such an aspirational product. I've never been so happy for a car launch.

With a sub-14 lakh entry price (on-road), this will do wonders. Gimmicky soft-roaders, which are a dime a dozen on our streets, command anywhere between 12 to 20 lakhs. Even if Mahindra does a Honda, this car is bound to succeed at least till the Jimny arrives.

Phew this bad boy in red looks really good. i think the front grill will need some after market work.

I am a bit iffy about the overall front look, it feels as if the vehicle has become narrower. As i have done in my 2015 Thar, using spacers the front wheels will pop out a bit, giving it the aggressive stance required.

Guys what are your thoughts on the Petrol Version with MT, will it have the torque and grunt of the existing 2.6L CRDE Engine. i am so used to the low end torque that my Thar has

Red one looks very plasticy but grey looks pretty good. That grille looks sad but easy to fix with an aftermarket option.

Petrol auto LX for me please in Rocky beige. I will live with the grill. Or probably change to a Mesh grill.

Would have preferred to have some type of armrest and cup holders for the rear seat passengers covering the back wheel arches. Just that area looks a bit barebones.

My wallet is on the table anyways.

+1!

I just read that she's been part of Mahindra's design team for the longest time now, and this Thar, for me, is one of their best designs yet (barring that grille, of course)

Here's an interview of hers I found online:
