re: The 2020 next-gen Mahindra Thar : Driving report on page 86

If it comes with front facing rear seats , then it is going to create a new segment. Although late, M&M should be applauded for doing this. Their market research team seems to be doing a good job.

This could be the Jimny moment for India. If this gets traction , lot of other manufacturers will also start bringing in compact 4x4s. Even Suzuki will be forced to bring its Jimny .

I am really impressed by the seat design for the new Thar. I think ACI had mentioned long ago that it wont get the side facing bench seats due to the norms.

Also, I think I am seeing a removable hard top like the Wrangler.

Is that a autobox? Believe the farthest is the gear lever and looks like a auto setup from its stance. On the foreground, I suppose that's the 4WD lever.

Good catch !!. It definitely looks like an autobox. The lever on the passenger side is the 4WD Lever. The new Thar has it on the passenger side unlike on the driver side like the current Thar.

European safety norms don't allow side facing seats. I see the roll cage and seatbelts for the rear passengers too.

If the new Thar has Hard Top, Automatic & Front facing back seat with seat belts, it will be dream come true for me. I am sure it will be nothing less than 16 lakhs on the road, but what ever, nothing else compares. !!

With the inclusion of a petrol, I think they might be eyeing the small market enjoyed by the Suzuki Jimny worldwide, that of a cheap, throwaround, basic, off roader. Markets like South Africa (which they are already familiar with) might take a liking to one.
Completely in Sync.
You spoke absolutely what was in my mind.
Hope Mahindra does that.

ACI's thoughts on the upcoming Thar,

Quote:
New engines

Mahindra will equip the next-gen Thar with a BS6-compliant 2.2-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-diesel engine expected to produce 140hp and 300Nm of torque – a substantial increase over the current SUV’s 105hp put out by the 2.5-litre diesel unit. There are also talks that Mahindra, for the first time since the Thar went on sale, could offer the SUV with a petrol engine. According to speculation, the petrol unit will be the same 2.2-litre engine that does duty on the XUV500

Looking at the latest spy shot, the rear seats appear to be side facing. I was expecting front facing seats in this iteration. Or are there going to be two variants?

Also appears to be a short wheelbase soft top version

Interesting to note that they are going for the 2.2 mHawk BS6 derivative then. Wasn't there a talk of the all new 2.0 motor making its way to the Thar?

Also quite evident that this is based on the Scorpio's chassis and design. See how the front of the bonnet is slightly goning upwards in relation to the point near the windshield; very similar to the Scorpio's current generation design philosophy.

This is the soft-top version. Makes more sense to have simpler and cheaper side facing seats in this variant. Probably (and hopefully) the hard top version will have plusher forward facing seats.

Is Mahindra making 2 variants with different wheel bases? I don't think it is required.

Jailbird! Thats a heck of a good set of catches.
The new gen Thar looks so close to a Wrangler JK crossed with a JL (because of the slightly outwardly bent 7 slat grille) Im wondering if the brothers at Jeep / FCA India will kick up a ruckus once it launches!
I mean this is quite deceptively similar to a Jeep Wrangler.
I wonder if M&M may not be already on the edge of copyright infringement with this avatar!

May be not. I remember to have read somewhere that they have/had license to use the 7 slotted grill in India, by virtue of an agreement originating from late 1950s, with Mitsubishi (who inturn had the Jeep license for Asia). Same they got away with the Grill of MM540/550 etc.

If not, this is going to be a hot bone of contention.

Best Regards & Drive Safe
