I love my Thar but it wont be setting any benchmarks. When the maker issues a checklist on how to replace the brake booster and calipers costing about 40k you can be sure there is something seriously wrong with the vehicle.

I saw a camouflaged, soft top, manual transmission test mule running on the 100ft road from Koyembedu CMBT to Vadapalani around 6.15 PM . The vehicle looked much bigger than the current Thar and seemed to have bigger wheels.

Could anyone shed some light on those two devices seated on top of the bumper on either side of the seven slat grill? Looks like aftermarket LED DRLs but I could be mistaken! Vehicle looks imposing with good road presence! I’m sure people will opt for the upcoming version as it is bound to have more creature comforts than the current-gen Thar. You better do it Mahindra!

None of the ‘hard-core’ off-roaders I know would even go within a mile of a thar for serious off roading. Enlighten me on the high benchmarks that this model set ? ? The owner s I know love they way they look but hate almost everything else about it from the quality, ride and continuous niggles .
No offence to Thar owners but it’s about time we call a spade a spade. I’m hoping for better things with the new gen Thar and it should cover all the deficiencies of the original thar.

I thought Thar was one of the preferred vehicles for hardcore off-roaders along with Gurkha and Gypsy. In your opinion, what is the preferred vehicle for these serious hardcore off-roaders then ? And what does it offer over a Thar ? I have never been part of an OTR in my life, so pardon me for sounding naive.

They all stick to solid axle jeeps with a combination of their preferred engine and gb. The engine in the thar lacks the low end crawling character that most of them need. And the solid axles afford them the peace of mind when they hit the tough trails. I don’t have much of an opinion Or knowledge about the Gurkha since they aren’t many in my part of the world but it seems like a very interesting and capable vehicle

Thanks to Aakash Verma for sending these images in. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing it with other enthusiasts via this Team-BHP page!

New images of the next generation Mahindra Thar reveal the car's soft top and parts of its interior.

The test mule of the Thar seen here is equipped with a fabric roof. On the inside, the car has a chunky dashboard with what appears to be a small infotainment screen in the centre. The rotary controls for the air-conditioning are located on the centre console and it has a 3-spoke steering wheel. The gear knob has a chrome bezel while the gear lever for the transfer case is located in front it.

The test car is riding on 16-inch steel wheels that are shod with 245/75 R16 tyres. The absence of alloy wheels suggest that this could be a lower variant.

The soft top on the current Gen THAR sure looks better quality, better design & better fit than what we have been seeing on the mules of the next gen. The Next Gen THAR soft top reminds me of the horrible looking one seen on Bolero Camper. Stitching also looks quite cheap.

Late BD Sir had sheepishly mentioned that the soft top of HIS creation THAR was sourced from the same company that supplies soft tops for a top European sports-car maker . He couldn't divulge the name of course. Certainly - this one seems sourced from a local umbrella repair fellow.

And my god the gap in the wheel & wheel arch on the rear...

As much as the Hard-top looks good, the Soft-top isn't looking all that great

I don't think the previous thar came with standard alloy wheels except for the 700 editions. all the marketing brochures have the erstwhile Scorpio wheels which required to be purchased as an accessory.

also hope these 245 tyres are not the horrible MRF/JK ones found on the Scorpio Getaway

I think what makes the soft top even less appealing is the stepped roof design which makes it look like the soft top is made to sit on a locally welded jugaad frame. The raised roof might actually be for increasing the rear headroom and the end result might actually be better to look at, but as for now, the raised roof spoils the cleanliness of the profile. I sincerely hope they include some roll over protection frames inside and give forward facing seats. This is a civilian use vehicle. The troopy seat configuration of the current Thar is outdated and unsafe for day-to-day use!

Thank you TeamBhp for sharing my pics. Attaching some more spy shots of the Thar with a hardtop as spotted by my friend Dr. Paary TTS, a proud Thar owner and an exception off-roader, on the Bangalore-Hosur Highway.

It has to be the cheap JK Elanzo. Even MRF wanderer does not have that particular size 245 75 R16. Or may be MRF is making it specially for new Thar. Other than JK,only Maxxis makes them and those are imported. So I think it has to be the el cheapo JK ones itself.

Its the MRF Wanderer - 245/75R16. Its clearly visible in the last of the set of pictures Tushar posted above. Its a close up of the tyre specifically.
