April 2017 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: April 2017 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks Aditya for the April report.

Here is my take on the data,

The Auto segment starts its fiscal year 2017/18 with a bang, starts with a double digit growth and beats forecasts.

Maruti Suzuki posted its highest sales figure and again crosses the 50+%Market Share. This is even when the Dzire sales is at its lowest and looks to consolidate further as the New Dzire launch on the cards..Bags 7 out of the top ten best sellers.
Swift is now the largest selling car, Baleno crosses the 17k mark again. Leads in almost every segment and is hard to imagine what is next ? Grand Vitara, Vitara , Kizashi with C/SUV’s dominating their future portfolio , seems to be the path they would tread.

Hyundai: Not a substantial growth and continues to ride on 3 models – Grand i10, Elite and Creta. With its upcoming face-lift Verna Hyundai needs more launches to have double digit growth.

Mahindra: Losing momentum in sales. One of the companies to have a negative growth repeatedly. Its new model the TUV and KUV have not been able to sustain its initial volumes – Reliability could be the main culprit and need to do more to regain customer’s confidence.

Mahindra's losing streak in the UV market share over the years,

April 2017 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis-uv.jpg

Honda: Honda has posted a good YoY Growth, riding on its new launches. Its new WR-V starts off with good numbers but looks to have cannibalized a part of Jazz and City. BR-V is the super dud from Honda with Brio along with Mobilio (stopped?) are the laggards from Honda

Toyota: A company build on the epitome of perception in Quality, Durability and Reliability rides high with Fortuner and Innova Crysta and shows phenomenal growth. They should now bring the hybrids and EV’s and make use of the Suzuki alliance for cracking the lower segments.

Volkswagen: A clear case of cannibalization in case of Ameo, dwindling numbers for Vento and Polo. A company concentrating on exports with domestic market not a priority.

Renault: Has KWID lost its magic? Shows negative growth all across its portfolio. Banking on Kaptur? Pricing is the key here and if going by rumours, they have may not get the expected results.

Moving to the segment toppers,

1. Hatchbacks ( excluding premium)

Re: April 2017 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

52% share. Just amazing and the old warhorse Swift leads the charge

How did the Baleno jump to 17K from ~12K every month? Is the RS selling that well?

Ciaz taking over the top spot from City once more.

Is this the effect of Gujarat plant being operation for Maruti? Brezza and S-Cross will greatly benefit from getting petrol engines added to the line up. Maruti should get it ASAP along with an Auto Box.

Dzire being launched this month will only amplify their market share IMHO. Good times for Maruti.

Maruti Suzuki has lot of pending orders and thanks to Gujarat plant.. Baleno is selling north of 15K figures. RS is also doing well as per Nexa manager!!

Maruti Suzuki is the clear leader and nobody can understand the Indian market like Maruti. With more than 50 percent market share.. Maruti is all time high . Shifting Ciaz to Nexa has been successful and there is marginal increase in sales. Maruti has also done good promotion for Nexa Ciaz.

Re: April 2017 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

1] With such intense competition customer is the king. Mahindra's repetitive negative growth is a reflection of new products with niggling issues and lack of a proactive attitude to sort out issues of a customer who has poured his hard earned money in to the product. KUV100 and TUV300 have sold ~2k units in April.

KUV100 costs 9 lakh rupess on road for the top end dual tone variant. T8 TUV300 AMT costs 12 lakh rupees on road. This is a lot of money in our nation and when you walk in to the service center after your purchase you see a ''chalta hai'' attitude the customer feels betrayed. That is the anger we are seeing why Mahindra have failed to succeed with their new models. The customers of Scorpio and XUV are treated differently and a little more positively. The Bolero brand is growing on it's own brand cult.

2] Despite old Dzire production being halted [ barring tour] to make way for new Dzire, Tigor has only sold 3638 units in April. With new Dzire making it's grand entry in the month of May life is going to get really challenging for Tigor unless they reduce the prices marginally to make it more value for money. Dzire offers more potent and driveable 4 cylinder diesel and petrol engines, much more premium experience, a more robust after sales and service, terrific resale value and Maruti Suzuki badge. Tigor is an excellent product let down by 3 things, ordinary three cylinder engine options with unsatisfactory NVH levels, not so aggressive pricing and poor after sales and service support. To combat that Tata need to up their showroom and after sales experience and make Tigor more value for money.

3] Honda WRV has started off well for what is an over 12 lakh rupee car [Diesel]. Some cannibalization is to expected between Jazz and WRV but Honda are employing the Maruti strategy where the Jazz used to sell around 2.5k to 3k units and now they are selling double of that put together. ''City'' name has a unique space in the hearts of Indian customers and it is ruling the roost in the segment along with Ciaz.

4] Last but not the least Maruti is first in every segment they are competing in bar the luxury softroader [ Creta segment]. 10 of the top 15 bestsellers are from Maruti.

Baleno has huge backlog, ~17K nos are I think result of Gujarat plan coming on full stream.

Swift from last 6 month has averaged ~14K, a sudden jump to ~24K this month cannot be a surge in demand, it would be more of production planning to accommodate anticipated (read huge) demand for new Dzire.

Wow, Look at the Top 10 car models. It has only 2 Brands - Maruti and Hyundai, with models in the ratio 7:3. What better example of Duopoly in our market, and the fact that these 2 are catering to what the customer needs. I would like to see the other brands giving some serious competition to these two, so that we get even better products and service.

Does the dip in Indica/Vista mean those are being phased out by Tata? Or has the demand hit a sudden trough?

C2 Segment Sedans

Ciaz : 7024
City : 5948
Rapid : 1077
Verna : 682
Vento : 564
Linea : 44

1. Only Ciaz and City have survived the competition from compact SUV / Cross overs

2. Vento and Rapid sales have declined by big margin.

3. Verna is selling just 600 plus units.. I hope you guys remember that she was "segment leader" few years back.

4. Linea : Who are you competing with?? Indians don't want your stiff body or mature suspension. But, your heart in competition cars.. 1.3 MJD sells 100 times more ( Say Ciaz 1.3 DDIS)

Re: April 2017 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

A few SUV pointers from my side.

1. The Fortuner remains unstoppable. A 40 lac vehicle selling 2k plus units is crystal clear proof of how enamoured the market is, of the SUV from Toyota.

2. The Endy has settled into a distant second position with 600 change and they seem to be complacent with that. Why else would they dilly-dally with their pricing and stop the 3.2 Trend (?). Someone at Ford is definitely smoking a lot of wrong stuff.

3. The Hexa goes from strength to strength. 1200 plus wholesale dispatches definitely mean that TML can sustain 1k plus units every month if they keep up their efforts. They can party if they maintain these figures over the next quarter.

4. XUV 5oo. Definitely long in the tooth now. In spite of having an AT, sunroof and AWD, the market isn't picking it up as much as it used to. The update is also around the corner.

5. Scorpio. The M2Di versions continue to rake in numbers and off late, I've seen a l-o-t of S10s in Tier-3 & 4 cities. Old is Gold holds true in this case at least.

6. Storme. TML should now offer only the V-400 on the Safari/Storme platform. The other variants are a waste of prod-line resources and supply chain efforts. With better interiors and a 4WD AT, it can bolster itself by at least another 200 units a month till the all new Safari is launched in 2018.

7. Mitsubishi twins are nothing worth talking about but if HMFCL could launch a 4WD AT Pajero Sport, they with the rear diff lock (something they have always had abroad), it could pick up some numbers. The Montero is beyond redemption now.
