Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Select Plus launched in India

Mitsubishi has introduced a special edition variant of the Pajero Sport. The Select Plus, as it is called, comes with few feature additions, some cosmetic updates and new dual tone colour options. The 4x2 automatic variant is priced at Rs. 30.53 lakh, while the 4x4 manual trim costs Rs. 30.95 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai).

The Pajero Sport Select Plus comes with beefier claddings on the wheel arches, front bumper and doors. The special edition adorns new dual tone colour scheme with the A, B and C pillars getting a gloss black treatment. The front grille and alloy wheels have also been blacked out, while the door handles and ORVMs get chrome ornamentation. The special edition can be opted in four dual tone colour schemes: Black and White, Black and Red, Black and Silver and Black and Yellow.

Changes made on the Pajero Sport Select Plus aren't just cosmetic in nature. The car gets multiple feature additions, including cruise control, DVD player for the rear seat occupants, HID headlights, LED daytime running lamps around the fog light housings, chiller box and auto-folding ORVMs.

No mechanical changes have been made to the special edition Pajero Sport. The SUV continues to be powered by a 2.5-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that churns out 176 BHP. With the all-wheel drive system, this engine develops 400 Nm, while the torque output for two-wheel drive model is 350 Nm.

Interesting launch. How much is the premium they are charging over the regular model for a bunch of aesthetic mods?

Also not a fan of the dual tone plack on the pillars, maybe they could have stuck to a black roof? The black on the pillars works for the Range Rovers because of the whole 'floating roof/greenhouse' concept, not on this as the pillars are very much integrated into the design. Also they blacked everything out and then added chrome OVRMs and door-handles. Real smart.

Typical Mitsubishi. They did the same with the last few batches of the old Pajero.

At this price, they would be lucky to sell even a handful units - with the more modern fortuner and endeavour well within reach.

Looks yuck! This seems to be a stock clearance exercise before launching new generation Pajero Sport. I don't think it makes any difference to their sales numbers. Even with new generation Pajero Sport, they would have to work really hard to compete with mighty Fortuner and Endevour!

How typical of Mitsubishi India to sell an old Pajero with dual tone exteriors. At least this time they placed the two colours on top of one another! Much better than the OG Pajero which looked like a half done paint job.

Otherwise, it definitely looks very butch, if not to compete with the Fortuner or Endeavour with these little revisions, they can look forward to not losing any ground to new entrants like the MU-X.

Mitsubishi in the 90s and the early 2000s was one of the most influential brands globally, with best sellers and icons such as the Lancer, Evolution, Pajero and Pajero Sport. This was buoyed by the fact that they won the Dakar rally several times and even the WRC with the legendary Tommi Makinnen.

But since then the brand just tanked in value and is now left with almost nothing of its glorious past. They are trying to resurrect it with the new Outlander, which is a chrome dressed station wagon. Its a massive deviation from what Mitsubishi has done before.

This Montero I think still retains the past glory of Mitsubishi and is still contemporary. It has a very understated design and to be very frank, in my all years of servicing and driving SUVs, I truly think Mitsubishi arguably the best 4X4 system. Simple to use and extremely capable.

If people want to show off with their SUVs, then a Fortuner is probably the way to go. But for true off-road capability, the Pajero is the outright winner.
