Next-gen Chevrolet Cruze spotted in India, but it won't be launched here

The new Chevrolet Cruze was spotted testing in India recently. While, General Motors have decided to pull out of the Indian market by the end of this year, their test program for future models destined for South-East Asian markets is still in full swing.

The 2018 Chevrolet Cruze was thought to be the car to replace the current Cruze in India. The new model has been completely redesigned and is based on an all-new platform which is lighter by almost 113 kg. Featuring GM's latest design language, the sleeker front fascia is more in-tune with the current generation GM products with the signature LED lights and a revised horizontal split-grille.

The 'Turbo' badge on the boot is a clear giveaway of the 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine under the bonnet. This LTZ variant sports a boot spoiler, alloy wheels, electric-folding mirrors and fog lamps. Inside, the new Cruze gets a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The new Cruze was spotted parked alongside the Spin MPV. The Maruti Ertiga rival was touted for launch this year but was shelved in favour of the Beat Activ which too was never launched here. General motors will use their manufacturing facilities in India for export markets.

Just wow for that Cruze update! Looks well-placed in design between funky Japanese/Korean and understated European ones. Not that the old Cruze was ugly but this looks sleeker in keeping with modern times. Would someone tell GM to come to senses? We deserve this car.

Even after a divorce, using your former partner's house for the benefit of your new partner.

Not cool Chevy!

They pulled out of South east Asia as well, so what are they testing for?

I fail to understand the logic behind using a country as manufacturing base, yet not finding a market locally. Does it mean, only exploit cheap labor but sell the product for a premium?

The Spin MPV looks decent and could taken some numbers away from Ertiga (if launched in India). Chevrolet should have launched these vehicles and seen the response before taking the decision to quit Indian Market.

Although the showrooms are finalizing shutdown dates, for GM, the entire country is their showroom. If they start assembling that Cruze in India, it's going to be the ultimate Make In India statement,

Adding salt to the injury.

Using India 'as an export base' is all lip service. They will eventually exit India completely, but don't want a PR debacle. Hence, the slow poison. First get rid of the GJ plant (and announce a fake $1 billion investment), then comes the shocker of a shutdown of local sales....and finally, an exit from India completely. I think it'll happen in the next 1 - 2 years itself. Whoever buys the Talegaon plant will get a great deal on it.

Not really. It was a dead-on-arrival product. This is what we had to say after Vid6639 previewed it at the 2016 Auto Expo. In ice-cream terms, it was as plain vanilla as you can get.
