The Alto was not being used for quite some time as the scooter did the daily driver for me for office commutes. Considering that, thought I’ll clock some kms on her. Moreover, my family was already there and I went just to bring them back home.

Yes, the fiesta is a 1.6 Sport and has airbags and ABS as standard, little did I knew then

Re: Why don't cars come with dashcams as standard fitment?

Seems like Tesla is taking the lead on this front: https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-dash...as-first-look/

Here’s a sample video of a dash cam recording from a Tesla, using the car’s front cameras:

Coming to think of it, it’s a rather simple but brilliant idea to make use of the front camera which are otherwise used for night vision and automatic road condition detection, something akin to Mercedes’ Magic Body Control, or whatever their branding is. The S class has it, at least the global version does, and even if the Indian legislation doesn’t permit use of IR or radios or such technology on our roads, there won’t be any need for the premium car sellers to strip our variants off these cams, since you can put them to some good use, like Tesla has. As others have noted, nothing would beat a factory-fitted cam that nicely integrates into the in-car infotainment system. But I suppose that would mean one avenue less for cost-cutting, so it’s unlikely the Big 3 German manufacturers are going to go the Tesla route anytime soon, at least in our country.

I did find one article on the Internet from a site that specialises in sale of dash cams, that purportedly rounds up the list of car manufacturers that offer factory fitted dash cam as part of the equipment, but I’m not sure how reliable the information is, so sharing it for whatever it’s worth: https://www.blackboxmycar.com/blogs/...ated-dash-cams

Re: Why don't cars come with dashcams as standard fitment?

A dashcam in my car is a big YES and I would prefer it factory fitted may be placed behind the inside rear view mirror. Lack of awareness regarding dashcams may be the primary reason but I think it's only a matter of time before it comes as a standard fitment and pretty sure insurance companies will endorse the same to the level of even offering additional discounts much like the anti-theft feature.

Re: Why don't cars come with dashcams as standard fitment?

This discussion began in 2017, and it has been approximately 6-7 years since then. However, dashcams have not yet become mandatory or been directly incorporated by manufacturers as standard equipment.

I am concerned about potential warranty issues and lack of trust in the brands available on Amazon, fearing fire hazards or other problems. Nevertheless, I am still interested in installing a dashcam, but I would prefer if it is done by the OEM.

Wow, that's great to hear! Hopefully, more manufacturers will catch up.

I have one question: If I purchase a dashcam online and provide it to a service center for hardwiring, could that potentially void the vehicle's warranty?

This can only be answered by Service Center guys. Check if they have any official dashcam as accessory. If so you can negotiate a deal to fix your favorite dashcam without voiding the warranty.

Looks like brands are finally acting on this. Few cars are offering them as accessories and hopefully more and more upcoming cars come with Dashcams as OEM fitments.

Kia does offer a dashcam as accessory for the Carens, but I bought my own Dashcam and requested the service center guys to fit it for me. Since it was dual dashcam, there was some work to be done for running the wire from the front to the back of the car. They happily obliged but advised me not to do hardwiring.
