Rumour: Mahindra working on XUV500 2.2-litre petrol

Mod Note: Our XUV500 Petrol AT Report has been taken live at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!

Mahindra is rumoured to be working on a petrol engine for the XUV500. This engine is being developed to enable the car to take on the Jeep Compass, which was launched last month.

According to media reports, the 2.2-litre petrol engine is derived from the same block as the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel. Rumours suggest that the XUV500 2.2-litre petrol will be available with a choice of manual and automatic transmissions. The new engine will debut on the facelift XUV500 and might only be available on a new G variant. The same engine could also be offered on the Scorpio later.

Interestingly, an XUV500 believed to be powered by a petrol engine was spotted recently in Dubai. The images of the car reveal a left-hand drive version of the crossover with Dubai registration plates and an automatic transmission.

A retuned version of the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine is also rumoured to be in the works and will be launched with the XUV500 facelift. The engine is expected to produce 170 BHP - an increase of 30 BHP over the current model.

Re: Rumour: Mahindra working on XUV500 2.2-litre petrol

Report does not say what kind of petrol engine it will be, but considering 2.2 liter, I am assuming a NA petrol. It will be heck of a engine, but in bumper to bumper trafic I think even a bus would return a better mileage .

If by any means they are thinking of a 2.2 liter turbo charged petrol, speechless .

I seriously hope that this report is wrong.
In this age of modern all-aluminium/alloy gasoline engines with Turbo & Direct Injection etc, what is the need of holding on to a Old & Heavy Cast Iron Block?

Re: Rumour: Mahindra working on XUV500 2.2-litre petrol

Good that they are testing it in Dubai, an oil well is necessary to keep it running

But something doesn't feel right about this report. Test cars usually have a lot of sensors/equipment connected, to monitor all kinds of things. Can't see anything here apart from a dashcam(?). The badge at the rear, W10 - while the report mentions a G variant.

If this is indeed an NA petrol engine, it would be awesome in the hills! No turbo-lag!

Wonder if Mahindra is able to leverage its acquisition of Ssangyong at all. They already have decent tried and tested Petrol engines in the Tivoli and the Fabulous Korando.

XUV Petrol version is being developed for the last 3 years. I doubt the car featured in this article is a petrol one. The petrol XUV was primarily aimed at international markets. But with the change in market dynamics, Mahindra may launch in Indian as well.

Re: Rumour: Mahindra working on XUV500 2.2-litre petrol

Would be primarily for exports. Even if they offer it here, it'll only be because they are anyway building it for export markets. Big, fat SUVs guzzle fuel like crazy with a petrol motor & the market has always rejected them. Mahindra should know - remember the disastrous Scorpio petrol? Or even the useless Safari petrol?

It's a different matter with lighter & smaller crossovers like the Creta & EcoSport; their petrol variants can still deliver acceptable mileage (smaller in size, lighter weight). But fat petrol SUVs are best left to the Middle East & USA.

Now, things could improve with turbo-charged direct-injection petrols; however, from the information available so far, it doesn't seem to be the case with Mahindra.

Fully agree with you. Plus, these jugaad petrols are never impressive to drive either. All similarly-designed ones have usually had strictly average NVH, never been revv-happy, are heavy & always guzzled fuel.

If they want to offer an alternative to the Jeep Compass (at least dimensions wise), wouldn't the TUV300 be a better choice as a guinea pig for the petrol engine?

The TUV300 is a ladder frame.

Mahindra is due to launch a petrol automatic in the market.

This shall be a 2.2-litre petrol engine churning about 140bhp of power and it will come with 6-speed automatic transmission

Petrol, automatic only, this is not for the Indian market. Creta over this any day.

This seems like a pointless exercise, just to have a petrol offering with no intention of it ever selling.

A 2.2Litre engine and 140 BHP seems low though the torque figures are decent. I wonder if it will sell better with stop-start and a mild hybrid system to keep the AC running at traffic lights. That's the biggest hurdle for acceptance of stop-start systems, IMHO.

I am sure there are many potential buyers in the market who are petrol heads, would want a spacious, butch looking car in the 15 lakh range, would prefer an automatic for their city travel and are not frequent offroaders. This looks like a good value proposition for them since there aren't many petrol SUVs in this segment, save the Creta and the Compass! (even the BRV CVT to an extent, if you would term it as an SUV )

If Mahindra manage to price this well, it could well eat into the Creta petrol automatic share. Lets wait and watch.

Again the same point mentioned in earlier posts will apply. Even if they actually price it low (quite impossible) - it will be a value proposition only till it comes out of the showroom after delivery. When the owner sees the fuel needle drop 1 step even when driving just from the fuel bunk to home on day 1 - the new car happiness will evaporate faster than petrol.

If the XUV500 doesn't return a good fuel economy either, people wouldn't even consider it over a CRETA. And a 2.2 NA petrol in a very heavy car like the XUV500 will make many Yankee cars feel threatened at their Game of GasGuzzler Thrones. Perhaps they should offer it with a factory fit CNG kit .

Re: Rumour: Mahindra working on XUV500 2.2-litre petrol

The 2.2 litre petrol is IMHO not practical in india unless the oil burners are banned all together. Such a heavy car can at best give a mileage of 6-7 kmpl given our traffic conditions, and even with a 60/70 liter fuel tank capacity, a miserly full tank range of 400 km's is simply unfathomable.

Lets reserve the XUV petrol to the oil sheiks of the middle east.
