Oops! Apologize for my earlier post. I miss understood the statement read on CNBC TV-18. The cess hike is approved and as follows.
Mid vehicles -2%
Large vehicles - 5%
Suvs- 7%
No hike on hybrids.
There is no announcement on when those rates will be effective.

As per FM the below
Status quo continues for small petrol and Diesel cars and hybrid cars.
No increase on cess on small cars.
No change in GST rates for Hybrid Cars and 13 seater vehicles.
Cess increase by 2% for Mid sized cars
Cess increase by 5% for Large size cars &
Cess increase by 7% for SUVs.

It will now be hilarious to see those manufacturers selling their raised hatches as SUVs, scratching their heads to see themselves pay the highest 7% cess whereas large sedans pay a lesser 5%.
Continue shouting from the roof tops that your pseudo raised hatches are SUVs. clap:

Will it be cubic capacity or the length of the vehicle or both? I guess they haven't decided with this.

Large car - Diesel engine 2000 cc and more.
SUV- Anything with GC greater than 170mm.
Just assumptions.
So the Mercedes C Class (2143 cc) will be a large car and the E Class(1991 cc) a mid sized one.
Auto makers likely to pass on the hike to customers.
M &M president Rajan predicts an increase of 60-70k on SUV prices. Demand likely to come down drastically.
Prediction of 15- 20 % drop in this segment.
Hyundai confirms an
increase of ~ 70k for CRETA. Predicts a damper to this festive season on the growth.
MID SIZE CARS - Capacity < 1400 cc.( confusion prevails on the definition). Honda chief confirms its
City price hike is inevitable.

During the pre GST era the definition of medium, large and SUVs were as follows.
Medium cars - Cars > 4m but with engine cc < 1500cc.
Large car - Cars > 4m and with engine cc > 1500cc.
SUVs - Cars > 4m and with GC > 170mm.
The racket of not maintaining roads then forcing people to buy vehicles with greater ground clearance, then taxing those vehicles at a higher rate has been perfected.
The gas guzzling SUV is an American phenomenon, the government has cleverly channelled that fake non existent problem to bilk the average car buyer. How many countries have this tax on ground clearance.?

Probably. So too will the Vento. The council really stuck it to Hyundai! Poor Verna is going to lose sales because of their engine capacity. Literally the only car in the segment with more than 1500cc engine.

This has to be one of the most hilarious posts! Our government's car classification is off by a huge margin. And so are our automotive sector's claims as to what category their vehicles fall under.

unfortuantely no. There are no changes to cars that measure less than 4m and have petrol cubic capacity of less than 1200cc and diesel at 1500cc.
Mid-size cars are defined as cars over 4 meters in length and have a petrol or a diesel engine not greater than 1500cc. Whereas, Luxury cars are over 4 meters in length powered by either a petrol or a diesel engine that is greater than 1.5-litre displacement.
Considering the above, this is what happens to us poor Indians;
Luxury: City Diesel and Petrol, Verna Diesel and Petrol.
Mid-Size: Ciaz Diesel and Petrol, Vento Diesel and Petrol.
Honestly, somone needs to wake up in the Government and smell the beans. Luxury should not be defined by lengths and cubic capacities. It has to be absolute value. But then again, India also has bureaucratic excellence and brilliance to state anyone earning Rs. 32 and more are not under poverty level. So I am not holding my breath on these sleeping beauties to wake up! :Frustrati
