This has to be one of the most hilarious posts! Our government's car classification is off by a huge margin. And so are our automotive sector's claims as to what category their vehicles fall under.
So the government's classifications and automotive sectors claims are what are hilarious, for they are ever changing and bendable. Why my post, for calling it out?

No offence to any small SUV owners, so hope no one takes any.

GST cess on midsize sedans, SUVs & luxury cars hiked to 25% (a 10% increase)

So if the fine print is read, am I right in assuming,

Honda City Petrol will see a price rise and the Diesel City stays at the current price ?

Also all SUVs and soft roaders with a ground clearance of less that 170mm, as per latest ARAI laden weight rule, will now be mid sized cars ?

Oh okay, I see then my post could be interpreted in more than 1 way. Haha! But of course, the silly manufacturers selling hatchbacks as SUVs will unnecessarily make the customers pay 7% more, for calling them SUVs.

Maybe Govt also needs to make a provision for differentiating between a Nexon/Ecosport and a Range Rover/Toyota Fortuner.

They really need to do that. But i doubt they have the willingness to do so.

re: GST cess on midsize sedans, SUVs & luxury cars hiked

It will surely help having clear cut definitions for various segments or vehicle classification based on Engine capacity, Seating capacity, Price band, Ex Showroom etc etc than having generic ones like small sized, mid sized and Large sized.

Or am I missing something. Can someone tell me what the classification for small sized, mid sized & Large sized cars are?

And GC for classification?

re: GST cess on midsize sedans, SUVs & luxury cars hiked

Sub 4 Meter Petrol Cars : 29%

Sub 4 Meter Diesel Cars : 31%

Cars > 4 Meter Cars with Engine < 2000 cc and Ground Clearance < 170 mm - Mid Sedan : 45%

Cars > 4 Meter Cars with Engine > 2000 cc and GC < 170 mm - Luxury Sedan : 48%

Cars > 4 Meter Cars with GC > 170 mm - SUV : 50%

Hike likely to be effective from 11th September

This may have the unintended effect of manufacturers calling their cars what they really are.

That doesn't take away from the fact the rules will be so convoluted, hilarity is guaranteed.

So where does this leave the Jeep Compass in terms of taxation rates. Is the ground clearance taken Laden as given by new NHAI guidelines or unladen? Laden GC for the compass is below 170mm I suppose coupled with the under 2L engine that should make it a Mid sedan with only a 2 percent cess. Am I correct in my interpretation or am I missing something?

Thanks, so that means Elantra should be only 2% hiked considering its 1999CC but greater than 4m. Verna would also be affected in a similar fashion. I think worst hit would be a non seller like Linea in this segment.

I think Corolla got the benefit being underpowered

re: GST cess on midsize sedans, SUVs & luxury cars hiked

Nice simplification - exactly what GST was supposed to accomplish. :-) Add the confusion about laden vs unladen ground clearance and we have nice recipe for entertainment.

I'm wondering what prevents SUV makers from putting something like a bumper lip (IIRC, Jeep compass has one) and then publish an artificially lower ground clearance number to be in the lower slab?

Wait.. So this means the hike on the Octavia RS will also be just 2%? What exactly is categorized as a large car then?

re: GST cess on midsize sedans, SUVs & luxury cars hiked

Here is the latest comparison chart after today's changes in Cess.

GST cess on midsize sedans, SUVs & luxury cars hiked-gst-comparison.jpg

Hope that the Creta 1.4 CRDI, Duster 1.5 dCi and S-Cross won't be classified as SUVs as their engine capacity is less than 1.5 litre.
