Ps: These are the figures from england and KMPL will decrease in Indian conditions. Also dont know if maruti will detune this engine.
The mileage here is for the swift, which happens to be heavier than what the new zen will be. So, even with detuning, I would expect the mileage to be higher!

20+ kpl in city would be stunning mileage for any car!

It would be very interesting to know the Maruti Zen diesel. If it keeps up with the FE of indica and with the after sales service of Maruti, I am sure it will be next car which would be on every miser's list and if the engine if powerful enouf and smooth then on every engine enthusiast list.

A shame that this car is a 1999 model, sold as a brand new car to the unsuspecting indian buyers, unsuspecting of Maruti!

TATA needs to act fast to DICORise the Indica. Otherwise its USP will be gone.

Just read in the Times of India that Maruti will launch the new zen on December 5th. It will be named as the "Zen Estilo". However, there was no mention of the diesel version in the article. I had spoken earlier to one of the personnel at the service station I frequent and was told that the diesel version was on the anvil too.

Any idea about the size of the diesel engine ie, cubic capacity? We might be in the market for a small fuel efficient car shortly, and if the diesel fits the budget, it would be great.
Is it going to be the old TUD5 or its derivative?
As I had said earlier, the interiors atleast looked to be of good quality. Couple of pics I had taken :

What about to space availability inside the car. This is more important for passengers. Indica is good in this. If zen is cramped compared to Indica, many will opt Indica for travel purposes.

Having said that, if new zen offers better FE and lower maintenance cost, cab owners will definitely prefer ZEN.

The service person I spoke to said that it would be the same 1.3 litre engine as in the swift, which definitely means that it would be very fuel efficient.

Retaining the Zen brand for this very "practical" car is v sad. Zens have established themselves as cheap, fun pocket rockets, with nary a thought to practicality. They were for enthusiasts on a budget, and didnt carry much beyond grocery, or 3.5 ppl in relative discomfort. The car was purely built around the driver, and if I could buy the 93 edition i had, i would.

The new car is probably saner and more practical, buts its not a Zen.
