The above article highlights some little known facts, e.g.:

- Out of series no. 1 will be available for Rs. 12 lacs (current price were Rs. 3 lacs).
- If more than one person demands the same number, RTO's shall aution it to et even higher price.
- The Car registration number AK - 47 is sold for approx Rs. 3 - 5 lacs in Punjab
- Official price of number 786 is hiked from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1.5 lacs in Mumbai.

Thanks,
This price hike is quite large! Just hope the bribe stops and it all goes official. At the moment the bribe amount is almost as much as the receipt amount.

The least they should do is allow an easy and smooth transfer of these numbers to your next car. There have been talks of this but not many have been able to facilitate this. If we are paying such large sums for a number it should be valid for life or at least transferable on your next few purchases.

Also, why do they even bother mentioning the in series prices for single digits? What are the odds that you register your car on the day a new series has been started?! It's almost always that you land up paying out of series fee for a single digit number.

The easiest place to get a good number in the new MH-48(Virar RTO) at the moment. The series are all single alphabets yet.

We paid only for the car and not anything extra for the VIP number it was bearing.

Jharkhand RTO does charge for VIP numbers, however it is much cheaper than the prices in Maharashtra. A four digit number in JH costs 11k, 3 digit costs 25k and single digit is 50k. Depending on your RTO agent you can get away without paying a bribe and just pay official receipt amount.

Hello,

After the recent hike in VIP (choice) number prices, Mumbai RTO had conducted first ever auction for special number 786 alloted for two-wheelers.

There were two bidders & the reserve price was Rs. 20,000 (since the rates are doubled from May 2013). The highest bid was Rs. 31,000 & the number was awarded to the bidder.

It seems a little strange to me - A person is ready to pay Rs. 31,000 for choice number for a bike whose approximate cost will be Rs. 80,000.

Thanks,

Had a 96 model Cielo till a couple of years back with reg no KL5 D 9999. Sold it for a paltry sum due to lack of parking space. Really repent selling it. Praying that it doesn't end up in the scrap yard.

Well in the middle east owners of S class and 7er mostly go for number plates that cost almost 120% of the car's cost.

The auction was quite heated and he had more than two competitors upto that price.

As a saving grace, the vehicle was much costlier - a BMW X5
Is that number of a BMW X5 or a Hyundai Verna.Althought it was then reported likewise, as per MVD website KL-01-AZ-1 is a Hyundai.Amusing!!!

I was lucky when it came to registration numbers of my vehicles. I am a fan of fancy numbers , especially double and triple digits and numbers that have repeat numericals one after the other.
But not to that extent that I felt like paying extra for them.

My Bullet Electra bought first hand has 2325, my second hand Bullet 500 has 4555 and my Figo first hand has 7775. All ending in 5.

7777 in the same series and same RTO as my Figo went to a Scorpio(old generation) owned by a local real estate guy named Sevenraj. People in Bangalore East would have noticed his Scorpio since it has his name and the number seven pasted all over his car.

Regards

He also wears just red and white clothing just like his car. I've seen his family at a school once about a year ago - all dressed in red and white.

I am planning on selling my '02 Fiat Palio limited edition with the number plate KA 02 MK 1 in the next couple of months. I got the number plate in 2002 for a few thousand Rupees. The main reason was to make a boatload of money when I sold it !
Any advice on how much I can expect for the plates ? (I know the car isnt worth much).

A Toyota Fortuner whizzed past last evening on my way home. It sported #1. The series was from Two-wheelers. Guess he might have spent more than a tidy sum for the No. as there weren't any logos / stickers of any sort like a political party, Defence, etc. Also the font used was quite classy. But.. he was weaving in & out of traffic at quite a bit of speed considering the vehicle size.

I registered my car at TN-18 (Red Hills RTO Chennai) last week. I was surprised that all the nos that say are allocated to the government are available to the general public. Below are the costs (for TN-18 RTO only)

No. "1"- Rs.1 Lakh + no objection certificate from the TN secretariat.
Serial "2-20" - Rs.50,000/- + no objection certificate from the TN secretariat.
Serial nos like "1111,2222 - 9999" - Rs.50,000/- + no objection certificate from the TN secretariat.
Serial nos like "0111,0222 - 0999" + Rs.40,000/- + no objection certificate from the TN secretariat.
No. "786" - Rs.75,000/- + no objection certificate from the TN secretariat.

General nos.
For 4-wheelers that cost above 4L - Rs.16,000/-
For 4-wheelers that cost below 4L - Rs.8,000/-
For 2-wheelers - Rs.2,000/-

I choose 1515 and paid Rs.16,000/- for it.

As an aside, I wonder where all this money that is made by the RTO's for the sale of these fancy numbers, goes.

It does not look like they are doing anything with it for our roads, that much is certain.
