You have to see drivetribe channel to see the crash analysis, the car rolled multiple times and went 2 sections down and I doubt a petrol powered car would fare any better.
Only the damaged cell will catch fire and you have time to escape, where as in a gasoline car its a different story.

There are battery tech like lithium iron phosphate aka LifeP04 which are used by many EV vehicles from china and they don't catch fire, but have the drawback of being only nominal voltage of 3.3v to 3.6v(fully charged) vs nominal of 3.7v to 4.2v(full charged) for li-on battery. Hence, you will need more batteries thus added weight, plus a more sophisticated battery monitering system or BMS and this is due to fact their voltage drops sharply just before the battery runs out of charge, so you can't know the level of charge by just seeing the voltage like most of the other BMS and you have to monitor both the output current and also input current to take into account the battery age.

Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), the nodal agency for procuring electric vehicles on behalf of Indian government, may once again have to defer the deadline for procurement of electric vehicles from Tata Motors Ltd and Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd. The reason: lack of battery charging infrastructure in the country.

A top executive at EESL said that deliveries will be received once Exicom Tele-Systems Ltd, the company that has won the tender for battery charging infrastructure starts building them. The vehicles were supposed to be delivered by 30 November and were subsequently postponed to 30 December.

The person said that the government will start taking deliveries of vehicles from Tata Motors and Mahindra in another 14 days.

EESL Scraps Tender to Buy 10,000 e-Cars

This tender was floated in April, and had been on hold after a preliminary pre-bid meeting.

Quote:

A similar tender was floated in August last year, and the rollout of 10,000 cars under the tender was expected to be complete by March 2019.

To avoid confusion, there were two tenders for 10,000 EVs each.

The first one was floated in October 2017, which still remains. Deliveries are to be completed by March 2019.

The second tender, which was floated in April 2018, has been put on hold. The reason given is "awaiting clarification on specifications for chargers which will allow higher end, luxury automakers to come into the picture."

I am assuming, now they want the luxury EVs instead of Veritos and Tigors for even more senior bureaucrats / politicians. Let's see how this develops.

Tata Motors may get notice over EV order

The move comes after the performance of the first batch of cars it delivered under the 5,000-vehicle order didn’t meet expectations and as the company is seeking changes to the specifications for further supplies

In fact, rival Mahindra & Mahindra, which is to supply another 5,000 cars in the second phase of the same tender for 10,000 vehicles, has also been negotiating to downgrade charging and battery specifications from what it had offered,

In my opinion a car designed for 130 km per charge may do at least 20% more in a owner users hand, but barely 60% of that in a chaffeurs hand.
The offer should be for both mileage and Ac hrs. A simple fact is that people working on site doing inspection etc use their cars like office extensions. Idle engine with Ac on for an hour or two is common, and so boxy low green house vehicles like Bolero and Innova are preferred.
If a hour meter is added, and specifications changed to 130km with 3 Hrs Ac or 100km with 5 Hrs Ac the cars may meet the target even today.
Other than on site people watch parking lots, you see many high end cars with engines idle and the Chaffeur sleeping with AC on.
