Mahindra working on KUV100 EV. EDIT: Launched at 8.25 lakh

Mahindra will reportedly launch an all-electric version of the KUV100 in 2018. Once launched, it will be the third electric car in the company's portfolio after the e2o Plus and eVerito.

According to Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra, all of the brand's SUVs will be offered with electric drivetrains in the near future and the KUV100 electric is part of this product plan. This comes in the wake of the Indian government's push to achieve 100% electric mobility by 2030.

A media report suggests that Mahindra is already working on the next-generation EVs and high-capacity batteries for increased range. Electric powertrains with outputs ranging from 41 BHP to 204 BHP are reportedly being developed. Meanwhile, the company expects prices of EVs to drop by 20% in the next 2 years thanks to localization.

re: Mahindra working on KUV100 EV

Kudos to Mahindra and Tata for steeping up the electric game. I hope the other international manufacturers also wake up and launch at least one electric car by 2020 (already many manufacturers have electric models in the international market). Lets hope the government also improves the charging infrastructure at a rapid pace, and also less taxes for electric vehicles.

Definitely a better starting point than the likes of the 2,000 kilo Scorpio or antique Verito . The KUV100 is also well-priced to start with (base variant = 4.4 lakhs), hence it has the potential to be a more accessible EV in the mass market.

re: Mahindra working on KUV100 EV

I just hope its not EV for EV sake. The last proper electric from Mahindra was an underpowered Verito with a wheezy 41hp electric motor with 91 nm torque driving a 1700 kg car with an official range of barely 110 kms! I am sure it will be less than 100 with the AC and some of the electric on.

Quite possible. Are they not sitting pretty on the 'Desi' EV which is part of the stable. However one can expect a limited range, say 150 km or so. Lithium battery prices have crashed of late, and the electrics are also becoming standard. Also, Power availability has come a long way. Only the 'fuelling' , ie charging stations remain.

The electric version of the KUV100 has been spotted testing on public roads for the very first time by an IAB reader.

Quote:
At first glance, it may appear to be a regular KUV100 since, visually, the test unit is identical to the 2017 Mahindra KUV100 NXT. However, the absence of an exhaust pipe and the lack of any form of engine noise gave it away. The exterior is finished in Fiery Orange with a Midnight Black rear bumper and an unpainted rear hatch. The left rear window is covered up and has some black piping running to the bottom.

Mahindra KUV100-based EV spotted testing

According to a media report from last month, Mahindra has been working on an all-electric version of the KUV100. Now, a spy image has surfaced online which appears to be of the rumoured KUV100-based electric vehicle (EV).

Mahindra working on KUV100 EV. EDIT: Launched at 8.25 lakh-mahindrakuv100electric.jpg

At first glance, the car looks like a standard KUV100 test mule. However, a closer look reveals the lack of an exhaust indicating an electric powertrain under the skin. The person who spotted the vehicle has reported that the car did not have any engine noise as well. Also note that the rear window has been taped off and has a pipe sticking out which connects to something underneath the vehicle.

Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra had earlier stated that an electric version of the KUV100 was part of the company’s future product plan. It will be the third EV in Mahindra’s portfolio, following the e2o Plus and eVerito sedan.

I don't know but the pic attached to this post does have a exhaust. May be it is the angle of the picture taken which assumed it did not have a exhaust. I have attached a normal photo of KUV100, the placement of exhaust is such that it is very well hidden.

On a second note if you see the stickers, they have written VP4 and P85 it may denote the BHP I am not sure.

It may be a electronic, which if it is then M&M are working ahead of the market to bring these on road earlier than others which is awesome.

VP means Vehicle Prototype. All companies follow different terminologies to indicate prototypes during product development process.

In Mahindra it is EP (Engineering Prototype) -> VP (Vehicle Prototype) -> Production Prototype (PP) -> TT (Tool Trials) so on.

There is a high probability that, it could be VP prototype of electric KUV.

re: Mahindra working on KUV100 EV

I am not sure if e-SUVs with limited range will really work. Most SUV owners buy it with a dream of taking it out on the highway at least a few times a year. Limited range will mean they can not do that.

Maybe a middle path would be good. An electric drive for the daily use, and a IC engine/range extender for the occasional highway runs. But that would push up the costs as well.

That's the thing I have been getting in mind ever since the world announced it's decision to change from Fossil Fuels to Electrification.

A Scorpio with its 80L tank would do 1000kms if filled fully, taking into consideration an average of 13kmpl. While a E-Scorpio would have a range of around 250-300 kms at max. If they want to up the range, the cost will escalate further. I doubt if anyone would buy a Scorpio if it's priced in range of Tuscon.

Their cheapest offering the e2o itself is priced high. So, Electric KUV1OO & Scorpio will be much higher then Petrol & Diesel versions despite the former being taxed at 12%.

That's were Hybrids are best at, they are best of both words. Although there aren't many Diesel Hybrids, a Petrol hybrid would do well in that case.

Thanks to our Government Misunderstandings, Hybrids won't be recognized. Don't know how they tax it high when it's the best medium to adapt from Fossil Fuels to Electric.

A couple of test mules of the KUV100 EV were caught by AutoSpy earlier today in Pune.

re: Seen the electric Mahindra eKUV100 on the move?

I got a personal message suggesting that I upload my video on YouTube and share the link here. Since I do not have a YouTube account, I took the alternative step of uploading to Facebook.

Here is a link to my video (and uncropped photos) showing the Mahindra eKUV100 accelerating from standstill:
