I made this time line for a wikipedia article on cars in india.

Iv mainly used the internet as a source and hence am not really sure about how accurate it is. please add dates or edit the existing ones if you think they are incorrect.

I would like to know when Opel & Peugeot entered India so that I can add it to the timeline

Iv also put in some information about companies which dont exist anymore such as standard motors nd sipani and am not sure about the details on the site so if anyone has anything to change please let me know.

Peugeot had launched its 309 in 1995 according to me...it was a collaboration with Premier Auto...

Sipani was orginally incorporated as Sunrise Automotive Industries Ltd in 1974 and changed its name to Sipani in 1978.

Rajah Motors in Chavakkad, Kerala was incorporated in 1991 and they made an MPV named Kazwa that looked like Renault Espace.

General Motors India, incorporated in 1994 as a 50-50 joint venture company with the C.K. Birla Group of Companies (and launched the Opel brand), became a fully owned subsidiary of GM in 1999 when GMOC bought the remaining shares. The company was restructured in 1999 and was converted from a Public Limited company to a Private Limited company.

Just my 2 cents.

OT: when you look at the timeline dont you feel sad about all those years wasted for the sake of of crappy socialism....?:Frustrati

Game?

I know this might seem weird, but I was just wondering about the history of Honda Cars in India and when did they get their different models in? Which years were the VTEC and i-VTEC introduced?

I was just doing a study on Honda in India and was trying to get the details. I do know for a fact that they came to India in 97 with the city and introduced the accord in 2001. But what variants did they come in? What was the pricing and how successful were they (in how many numbers did they sell on average)?

Any help from the experts and anyone who can chip in would be greatly appreciated. :D

In between, Ford trucks & buses were made in India (around 1985-90) by Amalgamation Group with a plant ex-Madras.

Isuzu trucks were manufactured by Hindustan Motors (around 1980-90).

You missed out the famous LCV explosion - DCM-Toyota, Eicher-Mitsubishi, Swaraj-Mazda & Allwyn-Nissan - all of which happened in 1984-85.

Rover Motors? The Rover 2000 (rechristened as Standard 2000) was manufactured by Standard Motors around 1983-85. And the Rover Montego was manufactured by Sipani Auto around 1990-95.

San Motors was originally Suri & Nayar and has been around longer than 1995. They used to make locomotives originally (like Tata Engineering & Locomotive Company, later Tata Motors).

What about the Heavy Vehicles Factory at Jabalpur (Indian Army-owned) which manufactured first the Saktiman (with inputs from MAN, I think), the Jonga and now the Stallion?

Ashok Motors changed to Ashokleyland by 1950!.
You can include that too.

There was also this company called Rajah Motors in the late 90s, they made an MPV of sorts with a 2 litre turbodiesel engine. It was called Kazwa and they made half a dozen odd before shutting down within the first year of operation!!

Thats the one. They should have perservered with it or maybe it was ahead of its time. Toyota is shifing Innovas by the bucktloads, come to think of it a start up Indian company had the right formula more than a decade ago!!! Only if Tata and Mahindra had picked up the cue then for a modern MPV.

Come to think of it, the Indian auto industry is such that has ample examples of vehicles which were ahead of their time but never did well.
