Toyota had earlier announced that the company had no plans to launch electric cars in India, since the country lacked the necessary charging infrastructure. Now, the Japanese manufacturer believes that the country's current charging infrastructure will be able to support Plug in Hybrid vehicles. In accordance with this, Toyota has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government of Andhra Pradesh to introduce Plug-in Hybrid & Electric Vehicles in the state.



The MoU was signed in the presence of Andhra Minister for Information Technology Nara Lokesh and Akito Tachibana, MD, Toyota Kirloskar Motors. This plan is in line with Toyota’s Environment Challenge 2050 which the company proposed in 2015.

Toyota will be conducting a feasibility study of the Prius hybrid and another small electric commuter vehicle in the city of Amaravati. According to the minister, the Andhra Pradesh government has plans to introduce electric vehicles in the Smart City Project at Amaravati.

A step forward as hybrids are the current best solution for India. When they come to mass-market cars, they'll improve fuel efficiency by 50% - 100% overnight. Camry Hybrid owners get 13 - 14 kmpl in the city (compared to 7 kmpl for the regular Camry).

However, plug-in hybrids aren't the right one for India. What we need is the regular hybrid that doesn't require plugging in. Else, it'll remain just a niche segment & a rich man's toy (how many people in India have charging points in their parking spot)?
