Got these via Whatsapp -

Looks like IOC too opened an EV charging station at Nagpur:

Indian Oil has partnered with cab aggregator Ola to set up the charging station at an IOC petrol pump here.

"Nagpur, being the first city to introduce the electric public transportation model in India, has added one more feather to its cap by adding the first electric charging station at Indian Oil's COCO (company-owned, company-operated) fuel station in the city," an IOC release said.

"We applaud Ola for building the electric vehicle eco-system from a nascent stage in Nagpur and are happy to partner with them in their efforts," IOC Executive Director (Maharashtra) Murali Srinivasan said in a statement.

Looks like both HPCL and IOC are claiming to be the "first" oil marketing company to open an EV charging station. I have updated the first post.

Why Nagpur? Related Thread.

I don't think the petrol pumps of today are suitable for EV charging - their layout is designed for cars to enter, quickly fill up and drive away. Limited fuel availability + longer time to fill up = long ques (just see the CNG lines). Today's EVs take a much longer time to charge. Of course, this will all change when EVs can get a good top-up in a handful of minutes, and the technology will certainly take us there, but it's a fair time away.

In the first phase, practicality will come from charging EVs at home, office and battery swapping.

Seems like they both want to be "first". But why? They are oil companies, wonder what they would gain by launching such a station. Are they planning to get into batteries too, just because electric is "catching up"! I could not find any info on the price they are charging and how is the customer billed. Any details?

+1. Charging stations are best implemented in parking lots at present.

Well, these state run companies don't want to be left behind the private companies for the future technologies. It may seem strange but similar things are happening in the power sector for the last 2 years which is a welcome change.
  • NTPC (National Thermal Power corporation) has setup around 1000 MW of solar and wind capacity.
  • NLC (Neyveli Lignite Corporation) is another govt thermal power company is setting up large scale solar power plants. It already won 500 MW project in Tamlinadu auction competing with many private companies. Its aim is to have around 4,000 MW of solar capacity. It also has small wind plants and tying up with railway to setup solar plants in vacant railway lands.
