The next-gen Hyundai Santro

I caught the new Santro testing near Badarpur Border, Delhi. This seems to be a different variant as it has holes cut for rear parking sensors. Couldn't spot any other differences in respect to the test vehicles spotted by other BHPians

Hyundai has a R&D center in Faridabad. I think this car is being test from that facility.

The thread takes me to 2001, when I bought Santro without knowing anything about cars. The tall look and easy ingress-egress was the only point made me buy one, over the other one I tested which as a Zen-D.
I just team-bhp only after selling it. But the ownership experience of Santro ziplus helped us to buy an i10 a decade later. Hyundai never disappointed.

If Santro comes with an AT, we will go for it again for sure.

Spotted Santro near my home in Bangalore. The Celerio ahead seem to be escorting the Santro and has a camera planted on roof for recording. Looks like Hyundai is bench marking Santro against Celerio, which is also good indication on pricing.

Sources close to the manufacturer have confirmed that the small car will be launched before October 2018. The launch will coincide with the end of Hyundai’s tear-jerking “Brilliant Moments” campaign. If we had to pick a date, we’d say September 23, 2018

The 2018 Santro will be powered by a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder engine. The motor is likely to develop around 66PS of power and 95Nm of torque. Hyundai has confirmed that an automated manual transmission (AMT) will be offered alongside the usual manual transmission. The brand has also categorically ruled out the possibility of a diesel-powered variant.

I bet the new car will not look anywhere close to those concept renderings !! It is based on the old i10 platform and even the test mules appear like erstwhile i10 body.

We have Alto, WagonR, Celerio along with the Kwid, all selling pretty well and Hyundai only has aging Eon in this space. Most of them are now selling in AMT avatar and the Santro too might do well here.

With a three cylinder unit, this car will face a very tough competition in the market as Hyundai's cars are already a little pricier while, Maruti has mastered the art of pricing and positioning its cars in the entry level segment quite well.

1.0L 3 cylinder engine would be a disappointment.

Hyundai should have retained / reworked the 1.1L 4 cylinder irde engine from i10.

Can't wait to see how Hyundai's in-house AMT unit compares with the ones used in Maruti and Tata cars. If it turns out well, it may be used in other compact/mid size cars from Hyundai family.

I caught the same car being tested in Palwal two days ago, this was the third time that I saw this car in Palwal. Luckily, on this occasion I was a pillion rider which gave me the opportunity to make a video. We had a Santro in our family which served us well, will be glad to see her in new avtaar.

The front seems similar to Xcent. This should be another good looking Hyundai and should have better interior and build quality than others in this segment.

OT: why is the scooter you're riding(pilion on) not having RVM?

In 3-5 Lakhs budget, the car to beat for Santro would be Tata's Tiago. Looking at the features and built quality standards set by Tiago, I don't think it will be a walk in the park for Hyundai. Lets see what it brings to the table apart from the H badge.

I do not think that rendering is accurate. Spy shots of the new Santro have clearly shown the profile and the car lacks the aggressive upward-sloping rear windows. For once, it appears function has been given precedence over form and that rear seat should be an airy and spacious one (just like the old Santro).
