Top 5 States with the most number of EVs in India (FY 2017)

With the country heading towards electrification by 2030, a state-wise survey of the electric vehicle sales was conducted by the Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicle (SMEV). Gujarat, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra emerged as the top 5 in the list.

The survey was conducted on all two and four-wheeled electric vehicles sold in 2016-2017. It revealed that out of the total EVs sold in the country, 92% were two-wheelers where as the remaining 8% were four-wheelers. Gujarat came in the first position with 4,330 EVs sold. West Bengal with 2,846 sales came in the second position, closely followed by Uttar Pradesh (2,467) and Rajasthan (2,388). Maharashtra came in the fifth position with 1,926 vehicles sold in the same period.

They survey also revealed that Delhi, which initially used to top this list came at the seventh position with only 1,072 vehicles sold. Further, a total of 25,000 EVs were sold in India in 2016-2017. Commenting on the survey, Mr. Sohinder Gill, director of corporate affairs at SMEV, said that the various government bodies and industries must work together with the implementation as well as the creation of new policies regarding the pollution and emissions of greenhouse gases.

re: Top 5 States with the most number of EVs in India (FY 2017)

Comparison with conventional car & bike sales:

Two wheeler sales per year: Roughly 18 million per year
Four Wheeler sales per year: Roughly 2 million per year (passenger vehicles only)

Looks like the oil Sheikhs can sleep easy for now, but they ought to watch out for an inflection point beyond which there is likely to be exponential growth in sales. Till then, the EV sales will just be treading water. 25,000 EVs sold in FY17 means electric vehicles have a market share of approximately 0.125%

re: Top 5 States with the most number of EVs in India (FY 2017)

Most of the countries in the world are capitalistic. EVs should make business sense to thrive. The trends of crude prices hitting record low is already affecting the economies of gulf countries. Some have started austerity measures.

The oil companies ExxonMobil, BP, Shell etc are also going to get affected and they will react/ adapt. As long as they keep crude prices low, EVs would make little business value.

Even our Government earns a lot from oil in the form of taxes. For example a typical price of petrol when it comes out of refinery is 30/lt. Dealer margin is 3/lt. So the effective price is 33. The rest is tax (73 - 33 ~= 40/lt which is more than 100%). So thats a big income at stake, our Government literally earns more than the Sheiks every barrel. I guess if EVs pickup there might be hefty taxes on electricity too.

If our government really wants to increase more EV sales, they first need to setup charging stations exactly like fuel stations are working in our country. The main reason is, that the electric cars currently on sale in India like Mahindra e2o series have limited range and they cannot be used in long runs. We need cars like Tesla to give humongus electric range at affordable prices. Just saying.

Re: Top 5 States with the most number of EVs in India (FY 2017)

It would be interesting to know which States have the most number of 4-wheeler EVs (rather, Mahindra EVs). My bet is it's either MH, Delhi or KA. MH because it's Mahindra's home state, Delhi because it's the biggest car market in India & KA because it's the original home of the Reva.

Even in the USA with its faster adoption of EVs, I'm certain that the % is currently as low.

Re: Top 5 States with the most number of EVs in India (FY 2017)

An couple of important notes for an EV in my opinion for our country:
  • The on-time/commute time. If the On-time is closer to the commute time, I think the usage and adoption rate can be way faster. Because that way the battery resource being wasted as entropy is much lower. (With our current un-predictive time lines thanks to traffic, it can be an impediment to the thought process)
  • Secondly availability of individual charging paradigms. Today these are hardly available in community living (apartments or otherwise). Individual houses are the only ones who can think of adopting the paradigm freely.

True. In the first half of 2017, plug-in vehicle share in USA is 1.07%.
In UK, Q1 2017 share is 1.47%.
In Germany, the share of EVs is less than 1.88% in August 2017.

Unlikely, as electricity is utilized for way too many other things.

But, if this every happens, ironically it will make alternate sources like home solar panels, etc more cost effective in comparison.

Though my bet would be on KA.

The fact that Bangalore has(/had?) the most charging stations also hints at this...
