Volvo XC40 India launch in July 2018

Swedish carmaker Volvo is gearing up to launch its all-new SUV, the XC40, in India in July 2018. At launch, Volvo's smallest SUV is expected to be offered only in the mid-spec R-Design trim

The XC40 will not be assembled at Volvo's Bengaluru facility – which assembles the XC90 and is expected to soon assemble the S90 sedan – since it is set up for the SPA platform and not for CMA-based models

Volvo XC 40 - first impressions are very strong. Like the individual shape. pretty handy off road, has plenty of torque and part time 4WD system. Gets Pilot Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control, drives itself practically; but need to be ready to take over.

Two observations, One it looks too small when viewed from side, looks to be as big as Creta may be. Two, whats with orange interiors, looks ugly! After building such a beautiful car, why did they mess the interiors?

Wow. Absolutely mouthwatering pictures specially the red shade. When is the pricing for this going to be announced? I am really tempted to exchange the 320D with this. Kudos to Volvo for implementing such radical designs. Its easy to enjoy the success today but the decision to move away from the otherwise sedate designs must have been a critical one at that moment.

Seems like no 360 degree camera on India spec xc40 . They should have included it.My Brother has already booked one and as per the dealer , deliveries will begin by July.

Details of the XC40 for India,

1.One diesel engine at launch - Petrol variant could come at a later date

A 2.0-litre four-cylinder, turbo-diesel motor mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. 190hp and 400Nm of peak torque are transmitted to all-four-wheels via a permanent AWD system.

2. Launch in a Single trim:

SUV will arrive in a single mid-spec R-Design variant. As such, it will feature equipment like 19-inch alloy wheels, active bending lights, wireless mobile phone charging, a 750W 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, powered tailgate, panoramic sunroof, heated front and rear seats, an all-black interior and Volvo's 9.0-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

3. Dual-tone exterior finishes

XC40, in R-Design-spec, will sport at least three dual-tone exterior finishes – red with a black top and blue or black with a white top.

4.Volvo levels of safety kit

To launch with radar-based active safety features like adaptive cruise control, oncoming lane mitigation, run-off-road mitigation and blind spot information. Other standard kit will include eight airbags, ABS, ESC, traction control, hill ascent and descent control, parking assist and more

But I guess that's mostly due to the fact that the bigger sibling works cheaper in the UK context. In India if the on-road price difference could be easily 10-15 lakhs, and the smaller XC40 is actually not too small in interior space.

-Target segment is the millennials

- The newest Volvo XC40 enters the compact luxury SUV segment in India and is about 6,000 units (per year) strong and only has traditional manufacturers like Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz present in it currently

- Segment break up : BMW X1 (37%), Mercedes-Benz GLA (35%), Audi Q3 (28%)

- Dimensions : Ground clearance: 211mm, height: 1652mm, width: 1863mm, length: 4425mm, wheelbase: 2702mm.

Speculated to retail at an ex-showroom price of ₹ 35 lakh, here are some impressions on the XC40 in India,

OverDrive:

Volvo has pulled off a class act with the XC40 – it comes loaded with a host of features and feels very premium in terms of feel. It looks stylish and upmarket but at the same time it also has the butch appeal young buyers would look for in a compact luxury SUV. The well-appointed interiors boast a premium finish that offers the feel of being in a more expensive SUV though, which is sure to click with prospective buyers. The XC40 also drives well and is impressive on the dynamics front which adds to its appeal immensely

Carand Bike:

The steering of the Volvo XC40 is lighter than expected but it handles well on Indian roads .
The throttle response and ESP settings change in off-road as well, and the car's tyres are also up to a bit of rough-roading. But this is not a serious off-roader and isn't meant to be anyway. It will give you good approach and departure angles though, and a generous 211 mm of ground clearance (The BMW X1 has 165 mm). It is on the road that the car will spend most of its time anyway. And there you will be happy with a supple ride quality, good handling and reasonably good power at hand. There is a touch of roll at higher speeds, which I did not expect. And the steering is way too light for my liking - even in Dynamic mode. The stiffer ride and quicker throttle response in that mode are good though
