Re: The 2019 5th-Generation Honda City

Here are some statistics to look at while we wait for the 5th Generation 2019/2020 Honda City:

The 2019 5th-Generation Honda City-city_sales.png
4th Generation Honda City

As can be seen from the chart above the years 2014 and 2015 were the peak period when the City sold the most. This streak went on quite well for the next few years with slight reductions with average reducing below 5K in 2016 and then again going upwards to 5K+ in 2017 and finally 2018 shows that the market has tilted clearly in favor of SUVs.

The 4th Gen City is by far the most sold City ever. Here is the Generation wise breakup:

Honda City in India - Generation wise breakup

Given that the Sedans are a shrinking market, the 4th Generation will possibly retain the tag for the largest sales for the City. I guess the release of 5th Gen City without a Hybrid will not help Honda much in terms of sales with the Diesel numbers dwindling further.

Like how the introduction of a diesel engine in 2014 sparked the City sales to peak, the introduction of a well priced Hybrid has the potential do the same for Honda if they release a Hybrid with the 5th Gen City. While I hope they do it, but a more realistic expectation is that the Hybrid will possibly come in with the 5th Gen Facelift rather than at launch...

There were also reports doing the rounds a few weeks back about Honda releasing the 5th gen City with a mild hybrid technology (like the one seen on the Ciaz, Ertiga etc). Not sure about the authenticity of such reports, but if this is actually true, it will not help Honda to resurrect the City by much.

Introduction of the diesel engine in the City was one of its inflection points as you rightly pointed out; and the next inflection point has to be the introduction of a proper hybrid technology, and not the pseudo ones we are currently seeing in the market.

Rumour: Next-gen Honda City development in final stage

Thanks to the Team-BHP fan (he prefers to remain anonymous) who sent this information in. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing it with other enthusiasts via this page!

The development of the next generation Honda City is reportedly in the final stages. The production of the car has been planned to start in February 2020, while the launch of the car has been planned in March 2020.

The fourth-generation City has been on sale since January 2014 and might have a total run of 6 years. In comparison, all the previous-generations of the City have been on sale for about 5 years.

We have previously reported that the new car is likely to be offered with a BS-VI compliant 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine paired with a 6-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission (CVT). At present, only the petrol version gets a CVT option.

In the international market, the new City is rumoured to get a 1.0-litre, turbocharged, 3-cylinder petrol engine paired with a 6-speed manual or CVT and a 1.5-litre, petrol-hybrid with two electric motors.

Re: The 2019 5th-Generation Honda City

The car exterior looks very similar to the current gen with minor tweaks.

Hope the interior is much more upgraded.

I don't think any spyshots have been revealed as yet and no one has seen any test mules. So most possibly that picture is only representative and is that of the current City. We have to wait till 2020 to see any more clues I guess.

Could the 2020 Fit / Jazz spyshots reveal something about the next City?

I guess this would be the next generation City - The Insight Prototype.

Honda Insight is as big as civic, its very unlikely that the new city will be of same dimensions.

Honda Insight is an existing hybrid from Honda, already on sale in various parts of the world. While the next gen City might borrow design cues from it but is not likely to be based on it out-an-out (as much as one would want so). Also, as Superleggera mentioned, it is more in the Civic territory i.e. a segment higher than City.

Next Generation Honda CITY spied in Thailand.

To be launched after the GEN. Next Jazz which is due in Oct-19. Expect an end 2019 launch.

Re: The 2019 5th-Generation Honda City

Considering the fact that we just started seeing this car in thailand, I wonder if this can make it to our market by end of 2019. Won't they need to test the car extensively in Indian conditions as well ?

If this news is indeed true, i can delay my new car by few more months.

I have never come across Honda cars being tested in India. May be they must be having a facility to simulate Indian road conditions & weather somewhere else.

But its high time next gen City is due.

Re: The 2019 5th-Generation Honda City

The Sub-four meter CSUVs have made it difficult for C2 segment sedans in India. About 10k per month is the average sale of C2 sedans; in addition to this, Honda asks for a reasonable premium on City (essentially in the higher trims) which makes it further difficult to secure volumes as CSUV offers endless features these days due to tax advantage.

Honda needs to re-look at the City strategy before launch of next version / avatar and bring back the desirability / aspiration associated with City, which is lost somehow in last couple of years.

A friend of mine who works for MSIL confirmed that cost of production of CSUV is very similar to a C2 sedan, its the tax break that helps companies load it with features. Similarly according to him, production of Dzire is cheaper than Swift due to the additional cost of rear hatch door and structural reinforcement required in Swift.

Re: The 2019 5th-Generation Honda City

About time this has been spotted ! The current generation was never spotted testing and i don't know how Honda pulled that off, truly unbelievable!

Early 2020 launch in india is what was reported, Thailand on the other hand will get it end of this year. It was India that saw the global launch of the current city and surpassing to see thailand getting priority this time around. Having said that, the new Amaze is yet to make it to Thailand.

Expect this to be a real stunner and i see it doing very well even though the segment is going to shrink and lose out to CSUVs.

Re: The 2019 5th-Generation Honda City

The front shape of the Amaze and the new Civic is what the new 2020 City will probably look like. I would say it would like a bigger Amaze and a smaller Civic once it's launched. I hope it has better build quality then the current gen and a proper hybrid system.
