NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Thread moved from the Assembly Line to the Indian Car Scene.

Thanks for the report, Addy.

Most car models show resurgence in sales numbers. Undoubtedly buoyed by the New Year interest by the consumer market.

WR-V dethrones City to become numero uno in the Honda India lineup yet again. Lesser demand for the City against the new Hyundai Verna, or WR-V picking up steam? Either way, Honda will be happy.

Strong numbers for the Verna. Hyundai should now think of introducing the SX(O) AT diesel to get more sales in. Nothing like a top-end AT option for niche customers.

Healthy rise in Tata Tigor's numbers. Renewed interest augurs good for this wonderful car. Will Tata give it a better set of engines? Or will the JTP version pull in the numbers? Time will tell.

And, the NuvoSport all set to be pulled out of M&M's ranks? Just 1 unit dispatched in the whole month?! In comparison, the much, much more premium & fancied Ford Mustang managed 4!

Few Points :

1. Maruti is going very strong. Baleno at 17k plus and more than 14k New Swift dispatched. S-Cross face lift is doing decent numbers.

2. C Segment Sedan battle : Ciaz is the winner for last month.

3. Ecosport and New Verna numbers have improved. Thanks to exports, we saw dip in December 2017.

4. Nexon and Tiago are doing really well for Tata motors.

5. Renault needs to focus more. Kwid numbers have also reduced, their bread and butter. Captur is a disaster.

6. Skoda and VW are struggling. No improvements.

7. Innova Crysta and Fortuner are doing good numbers. Happy Toyota :).

8. Jeep Compass is doing steady 2k units.

9. Indian car brands Mahindra and Tata are at 3rd and 4th spot clap:.

10. Out of top 10 cars sold last month :
Maruti : 6/10
Hyundai : 3/10
Tata : 1/10 (Oh yes, Tata has got a car in top 10)

My thoughts (dil se ;) ) -

Datsun - Redigo doing some numbers, that's it. If this model would have launched by Maruti, it would have been doing 15-20 K per month, wanna bet ??

Ford - Ecosport done really good this month. Not sure why sudden high numbers this month. Avg Figo numbers for last 6 months are less than 1000 which is really low for the segment, flop show continues. Aspire down by half, Endeavour doing good numbers, new year rush i guess.

Fiat - Feel very sad for them, cant help it.

Honda - BRV is average, WRV is doing some good numbers. City is consistent but lost to Ciaz and Verna both this month. Wonder how Brio still keep selling, its quite old car now and user has many better options in market, still it sells.

Hyundai - Verna has done good again this month. i10 Grand, i20 and Creta are doing great as usual. Eon keeps doing some good volume.

Jeep - Lost quite a bit, in fact 25 % almost. Any production issues?

Mahindra - Good month, Bolero, Scorpio, TUV and XUV, all registered good numbers, number 3 this month. Verito still sells is itself a news. Get new MPV with a bang and hold number 3 permanently Mahindra.

Maruti - Dzire No 1 again !! Good month overall. Top 20 has 10 from Maruti speaks the volume. Ciaz number 1 again is great news. S-cross doing good numbers. Considering petrol trend in last 2-3 years, good 1.4 liter petrol engine can generate good numbers for both S-cross and Brezza. Not sure why Maruti still doing diesel only approach here.

Nissan-Renault - Only Kwid is doing some numbers, rest all are gone down over time. Duster numbers are big worry for them. Captur can be declared as a flop officially now.

Skoda-VW - Nothing great, same story from last few months. VW Happy with export.

Tata - Tiago and Nexon doing good numbers, Tigor is back with some good numbers as well. Rest is history we can say. Not sure why Tata is not getting all new Sumo, it was a very successful model and can bring great numbers for them.

Toyota - Innova keeps doing some unrealistic numbers over the years, same with Fortuner. Others are mainly to occupy their big showrooms.

Good to see TATA Tigor regaining number 3 position in Compact Sedan category. Effectively its number 2 since most of the Xcent sales are from commercial segment and the gap between Xcent and Tigor is only few hundreds.

I see a lot of AMT Tigor's in Delhi-NCR now (apart from mine ;-) ). For an AMT the gearbox is quite refined and 3 drive modes (City,Sport,Manual) add to the fun. The engine does not feel underpowered in Sport and Manual mode at all.

Looking forward to Tigor JTP Sports to take the sales number even higher!

EcoSport back in 6K territory. Sustainable? Who knows. Lets ask Brezza, shall we!

Creta posts strong nos, back to 9K territory.

Thank god for Bolero, else M&M would have lagged behind Tata Motors.

Dzire continuous its 20K plus run. Swift at 14K. Next month, this is the number to watch out for.

Captur's dreadful run...continuous!

Stellar numbers from Tiago. Nexon doing well to back Tata Motors' fight.

Hexa has excellent ride quality. But its sales figures keep bobbing! Back to 3 digit figures! Sells 1/3rd of XUV500.

Innova & Fortuner continue to keep Toyota's fortune intact.

Tata Motors trailing M&M, by a very close margin. This is going to be an interesting fight. Get those popcorn buckets out already.:D

They may be rivals on the playing field, but the sales chart has something different to say. The difference is quite massive!

I may sound sadistic, but am grinning with glee seeing the abysmal numbers of the Captur. After the farce they tried to pull off passing off the Kaptur as the Captur, Renault deserves the flop. Another look at the Duster's numbers doubles that glee. Karma.

  • 529 Endeavour v/s 2136 Fortuner
  • 215 Tuscon v/s 2016 Compass

Add to the list the numbers of the Hexa and the XUV500. It seems competent products struggle more in our market. Even the Scorpio continues to chug along, despite being unsafe, cramped and crude by modern standards.

Renault Captur is slowly moving towards the intensive care unit and probably ventilator too , bit earlier. Renault please stop making cars for India, please start bringing out cars that are contemporary. Please go through the sales figures of Fortuner and Innova, its not like that costly cars don’t sell. A quality product will definitely sell. Some heads need to be rolled at the Indian operations. How long can Kwid run the show?

Feels good to see Tiago, Tigor & Nexon putting up healthy numbers. Infact Tiago has pipped Celerio to snatch the #2 position behind WagonR, as I had predicted a while back.

Verna bounced back, but Ciaz bounced back even more to leapfrog both City / Verna.

Lots of Swift sold compared to the last 6 months - discounts before the new model is launched?
