re: The Toyota Yaris. EDIT: Prices start at Rs. 8.75 lakh

Toyota India seems to quietly launched the Yaris is India. I could find the Yaris in the product lineup in Toyota India website. However, the pricing details are not available.
https://www.toyotabharat.com/showroom/yaris/

Given the importance of the car for Toyota India , a launch without much media coverage is quite surprising

That's not the launch. This page has been online within a few days after the auto expo. It's just informational page. Launch is in April.

I really don't see why Toyota can't sell the diesel variant with the 87 bhp state of tune.
When Hyundai can use the same engine for the Verna and Elantra, I'm sure toyota can sell Yaris and Corolla with the same engine.

Or they don't want the cabbies to buy the Yaris?

Maybe, they are waiting for the Euro 6 regulations to come in and then launch the Euro 6 compliant D-4D which have a much better peak torque range from 1400 rpms to 2800 rpms.

Even with the Etios, they launched the Petrol first and then the Diesel. But, here they are non-committal about the Diesel engine. It could be because of the consciousness of taxi image as well. Regardless, if the sales number doesn't pick with only Petrol, they might be forced to introduce Diesel. But, India seems to be moving away from Diesel cars now. Only around 20-25% of the cars sold today in that segment is Diesel.

If I were to shop for a sedan today, it will be a petrol. But if I consider MPV or SUV, I would rather bet on the diesel torque for the UV abilities

So Toyota might be spot on here. Had they launched Rush, may be diesel would have been an option

Any idea regarding the launch of the Yaris? I see ads everywhere but no mention about the launch date. 2 of my friends are considering it as a replacement for their Etios and city zx respectively.

Most likely 18th April 2018.

Although I am not too sure how reliable the source of info is, but I heard it from someone at Toyota.

Rumour: Toyota Yaris to be launched on April 24, 2018

According to a media report, Toyota is set to launch the Yaris on April 24, 2018. Earlier, Toyota had announced that bookings would commence in April 2018, but there have been reports of some dealerships accepting pre-bookings for a sum of Rs. 50,000.

The Toyota Yaris. EDIT: Prices start at Rs. 8.75 lakh-yaris.jpg

The Toyota Yaris has large sweptback headlamps in the front featuring projector lights and LED DRLs, while the rear features wraparound tail lights. The car has a coupe-like roofline. It gets alloy wheels and comes equipped with disc brakes on both axles. Moving to the interior, the Yaris gets leather upholstery and ambient lighting. It has a 7.0-inch infotainment system with integrated navigation and gesture control. Other features include cruise control, rain sensing wipers, electric ORVMs and power adjustable driver seat.

In India, the Yaris will be offered with a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine. Toyota hasn't announced the final specifications of the engine however it is likely to have a peak output of 106 BHP. The engine will be paired with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed CVT with paddle shift. In terms of safety features, the Yaris gets ABS with EBD, 7 airbags, hill start assist, traction control, stability control, front and rear parking sensors and reversing camera.

The Toyota Yaris will compete with the Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Maruti Ciaz in the mid-size sedan segment.

I think he is referring to this,
https://www.instagram.com/p/Bgx8KNuhyfV/

I had called my Toyota SA day before yesterday to enquire about the Yaris.

While he wasn't completely sure on some things, he did spell out whatever he knew.
  • There will be 2 variants (V & VX), there may be a 3rd One(G). He wasn't sure though.
  • Push Button Start/Stop, Cruise Control, Dual Airbags, ABS with EBD, Rear AC Vents, Touchscreen HU with Apple Car Play & Android Auto, Cooled Glovebox, Height Adjustable Driver Seat, Reverse Camera, Front & Rear Parking Sensors, 4.2" MID, Alloy Wheels are all standard across the trims, according to him.
  • VX gets Leather Seats, DRLs, Auto Headlights & Wipers, Powered Driver Seat over V. He wasn't sure if V has Auto Headlights & Wipers. He said he'll confirm me once he receives the Official Features & Specifications List.
  • Car is already in production & should arrive at dealerships by April Last Week. Media Drive is to be held on 2nd/3rd week of April. Launch is rumoured to be on 24th.(Again will confirm it when he gets to know it).
  • Total 5 out of 7 Color Options (Pearl White/Silver/Grey/Black/Super White) are confirmed. He wasn't sure about the other 2, it might be Blue(Dark or Light), Brown(Phantom Brown of Fortuner) or Purple/Maroon (Similar to Garnet Red on Innova).
  • Bookings are open. Booking amount is ₹50k. Fully Refundable.

Although we know that it'll be available only in Petrol, I was curious to know whether CVT will be offered across the range, to which he said, CVT is confirmed for VX, he wasn't sure about V.

This car has impressed me, will be checking it out as soon as it reaches dealership. Will update again once more information is gathered.
