That's a good news , Yaris will be given to auto experts for review starting from this Sunday I think. Let's see if Toyota prices this aggressively and utilizes the opportunity well. With city not being niggle-free these days, this should be one of the best choices for petrol sedan buyers.

Thanks for sharing!

This car's primary competition is the Honda City and the others (Verna, Ciaz etc) come further down in the list.

I believe Honda has a tough fight on its hands. As an ex Honda City owner, believe me, if I was in the market today for a C category petrol sedan this vehicle would interest me the most. I expect the pricing to be around the same as a Honda City with a similar trim level; going from low to top end variant it should be 14-17L OTR. Like Hondas, Toyotas certainly don't come cheap. I'd leave the discount pricing to the Vernas and Ciazs of the world.

IMO this car punches above its category and sounds good enough to eat into some sales from the D1 segment too, mainly the Corolla Altis.

Just look at the Figo/Aspire and the impact their 6 airbags has had on the Dzire or the other compact sedans for reference.
You make a good point, but we need to remember Ford's impression in the Indian market from the past in terms of lower mileage, expensive parts, low resale value etc., which makes buyers apprehensive about buying their cars today, even though all of those things have changed now. The Ford cars as of today are right up there with the best, if not better in some cases, but word of mouth matters a lot.

Toyota as a brand in India is not carrying any baggage, and enjoys a very good impression amongst the masses. It is even considered a premium brand by many. This alone will be a selling point for the Yaris.

After seeing the list of variants, I have to say hats off to Toyota for having safety in mind for all the variants, and not expecting the Indian buyer to pay extra just to keep his/her family safe
I hope that the Yaris is a success for them, and that the others are forced to follow suit, at least where the safety features are concerned.

Cheers

re: The Toyota Yaris. EDIT: Prices start at Rs. 8.75 lakh

As am looking for a fully loaded petrol automatic, I registered for it and received a call back. Their call centre person said that the launch is confirmed for end of April and that the showroom will contact me for test drive. I coaxed the call centre person to reveal more details(price, confirmed launch date, etc) but she was unwilling(either doesn't know or can't reveal). Guess it will be 24th April as mentioned before in this post.

My current shortlisted vehicles are(Petrol fully loaded AT):
City, Verna, Octavia(huge budget stretch )
Creta Facelift AT(to be launched), Yaris(To be launched)

Yaris is on top of my preferred list now after looking at the amazing features. Open questions: Engine/Power - 108 BHP seems underpowered? Look wise(Interior + exterior) - need to see it in flesh before deciding

re: The Toyota Yaris. EDIT: Prices start at Rs. 8.75 lakh

I’ve been informed that the car will be priced between 12-16 lacs ex showroom. Launch is expected to be on April 25th or so, while dealers are already accepting bookings.

12-16 lakh ex-showroom will put it in a mini segment between the City and the Corolla. The lower J and G variants will be on par with the V CVT/VX of the City, whereas the highest VX variant would be on par with the G variant of the Corolla.

Defintinely Yaris wont be as power packed as Octavia (it is enthusiast's darling) , at the same time for the segment it won't be under powered at all. We have to take bhp figures with a pinch of salt as state of tune across the rev band and real time power usability are more important. From what I could perceive Yaris will try to achieve middle ground in terms of performance, mileage, interiors but excel in safety features compared to its rivals. In general, Toyotas are not for spirited driving like skodas and hondas are for but it won't disappoint it's owner

Yes, spoke to the Pune dealer now and the sales person said it will be between 12 - 17 L ex-showroom as per their estimate. Launch is confirmed for 25th April while deliveries could start in May after formalities completion. They have indeed accepted bookings and are promising full refund in case of cancellations.

re: The Toyota Yaris. EDIT: Prices start at Rs. 8.75 lakh

If I am correct, the petrol engine of Yaris is a derivative of Etios engine 2NR-FE. The engine in 90PS guise feels quite peppy in Liva, and just above average in Etios. The 107 HP should make Yaris better than Ciaz and match Verna but will not be able to match iVtec and TSi.

re: The Toyota Yaris. EDIT: Prices start at Rs. 8.75 lakh

Toyota's pricing strategy is going to have a direct effect on Honda's strategy. If they launch the Yaris at 12-16 lakhs (putting it in a mini segment between the City and Corolla, as nikipedia pointed out), expect Honda to move the City up there too. Consequently, the Amaze and Civic at both ends of the City will get a lot more expensive.

However, I hope they price it sensibly. Bang against the City would be the ideal positioning.

It's the same 2NR FE as in Etios but with Dual VVTI, so for daily duties and occasionally highway runs I think it's more than sufficient.

re: The Toyota Yaris. EDIT: Prices start at Rs. 8.75 lakh

Toyota Yaris - Autoportal review,

Zigwheels,

Evo India,

Car and Bike- Review:

- manual transmission variant returns a fuel efficiency figure of 17.1 kmpl, while the CVT returns 17.8 kmpl
- the CVT is available right from the base variant
-Toyota has brought paddle shift to the CVT party, but only on the top-spec VX.
-The 6-speed manual is the better variant to drive as the gear changes prompt some quick action

CVT:
Quote:
Feed the accelerator and the gearbox starts to react. It doesn't respond quickly though and hence there's a lot of rumble from the engine that you hear before the gearbox starts playing catch up. It suffers from the typical rubber band effect that we see on CVTs

Quote:
So it will set some benchmarks in terms of features and safety. But it won't be the car for spirited or sporty driving
