Maruti Suzuki has showcased its first Concept EV, the e-Survivor at Auto Expo 2018. The company intends to show its commitment to help develop the entire lifecycle of EVs in India including local manufacture of components, charging infrastructure and recycling of batteries:


Front of the car features an off-road bumper with multiple towing points:


Rear of the car has a display screen and an off-road bumper with a couple of towing points:


e-Survivor has ladder frame and lightweight compact body:


LEDs in the headlamps and on the 5-slats of the front grille:


The wheels are backlit too:


e-Survivor measures 3,460 mm in length, 1,645 mm in width and 1,655 mm in height:


Doors feature glass that can be turned transparent or opaque according to the user's preference:


Opening and closing of doors is done electrically:


Jazzy 17-inch alloy wheels shod with 215/70 section Bridgestone Dueler tyres:


Ground clearance is high. Axle and differential look futuristic. The car is equipped with autonomous driving capabilities, but it can also be switched to manual mode for off-road driving:


Four in-wheel electric motors control the four wheels independently. Note the portal axles with the ball joint for steering. It allows for on-the-spot turning as well:


Suzuki has used the name Rhino for its off-roaders in the past. An image of a rhinoceros is displayed on the rear screen to symbolise the connection:


Interiors feature a flat-bottom steering wheel and a spherical monitor on which the vehicle’s status and the road conditions can be checked:


Speedometer with inset tachometer pop out of the dashboard. MID is housed in the steering wheel:


Seats have orange leather upholstery and harnesses:


Passenger side of the dashboard gets a leather-wrapped grab handle:


The vehicle is equipped with a navigation system and a wide monitor for displaying online information and images from vehicle cameras. Smartphones and a variety of other electronic devices can be connected to the vehicle to display information on the topography, nearby vehicles, weather and more:


Side step is necessary to get into a car with such a high ground clearance. Door sills feature thin aluminium scuff plates with Suzuki branding:

A few observations/comments:

1. EV + autonomous ! I like!
2. BUT, looks super ugly. Consistently. From all sides. Is there any unwritten rule somewhere that EVs HAVE to look ugly ?
3. Lots of pointless stuff just for the heck of showcasing something new. A screen at the back...why? Air-bag on the center beam .. why? Speedometer that pops out. MID in the middle of the steering wheel. Backlit wheels. Part of the door can be turned transparent or opaque. WHY? What's the use-case for these features? Anything goes in the name of 'futuristic'?
4. What is that balloon where we generally find the infotainment system?
5. No ORVMs ? No IRVM?

I somehow feel that underneath all these jazz associated with a concept (which we all know as baseless), the e-Survivor is in essence the 2018 Jimny designed to be compatible with full electric drive.

The overall design is a bit claustrophobic, but once it's been pared down a few notches, it could look good.

There are a few retro-futuristic elements to it that are appealing.

Also, +1 for portal axles (that'll never make it to production)

I can understand Suzuki wants to make point that they are out of the box designers but this looks downright ugly.

+Love the wide display panel and the dome of display unit
+Seat profile, seat belts look nice
-Not sure if this is how a 4x4 has to be built, particularly the beam acting as roof- whats happens if there is a tip over when driving?
-Roof down option and HVAC not there is it?
-Electric car with no roof on a rainy slushy area? I'll be worried.

First of all this is a concept vehicle, which won't make it to production, but just showcases some of the thoughts that the company is playing with.

Secondly, this probably is a faint formal indication that the Jimny is about to make it to our shores. The proportions and the layout indicates so.

Thirdly, since the concept showcases all-independent suspension (with portal axles) with fixed differentials on each end, is the Jimny going to follow the same route internationally?

A great idea, this portal axle (so far seen here only on some military vehicles) with terrific advantages! - individual motors in each wheel hub, and if it has inbuilt reduction gearing in the hub like the 'AVE 130 electric portal axle' (https://www.zf.com/corporate/en_de/m..._22132904.html) the starting torque available would be cosmic.

But I don't see if a differential(s) would be needed at all, anywhere. Won't the individual hub motors' control system have the necessary algorithm built-in to take care of situations needing a differential's intervention? Mechanical differentials - of all kinds - could be on the way-outclap: Ye gods! - There goes the happy prospect of taking the mickey out of non-gearheads!
