Tata H5X SUV goes off-road testing

The Tata H5X SUV will be launched later this year. Images - Mr Deokate.

Tata H5X concept measured 4,575mm in length, 1,960 mm in width and 1,686 mm in height and it will sit on a 2,740 mm long wheelbase.

On the 7 seater SUV (H7X), the engine will offer 170 bhp power and 350 Nm torque which will be more than the 140 bhp power and 320 Nm torque on 5 seater H5X. On both models, the engine will be mated to 6 speed manual and 9 speed automatic.

Just a little shorter than the Storme ( 4655 vs 4575), and almost the same width (1965 vs 1960). But Wheelbase is longer by 9 cm ( 2650 vs 2740) - Hope the turning radius is not drastically more.

Hey Guys,

I'm not sure about this - spotted this car near Pune University a couple of days back. Maybe it is a Tata H5X being road tested.

I couldn't get any pictures from the side or the front since my exit came up by the time I could get into a proper position :(

What are your thoughts on this? Is it the H5X?

Our friendly neighborhood AutoSpy has taken some snaps of the Q50x test mule earlier today, including a clear interior spyshot.

His observations:

1) Fuel lid on driver side - indication of European LR Discovery shell.
2) Under the camouflage, the colour shade seemed like deep Maroon.
3) The Head Unit seemed huge. More than 10 inches.

A Tata Motors representative has revealed launch timelines of Tata Motors H5X SUV and 45X hatchback. Speaking to Times of India in Kolkata, PV business unit president Mayank Pareek said that Tata Motors will launch the H5X in the first quarter of next year while the premium 45X hatchback will be launched in the second half of next year.

Mayank Pareek, President, Passenger Vehicle business unit, Tata Motors has told the media that the carmaker will launch the H5X SUV in the first quarter of 2019. Tata is also working on a premium hatchback that will rival the likes of the Maruti Baleno and Hyundai i20. Codenamed 45X, this new hatchback will be launched in the second half of next year.



The Tata H5X and 45X were showcased in concept form at the 2018 Auto Expo. The H5X is a 5-seater SUV, which is based on Tata's new Omega platform, which in turn is derived from the Land Rover's L550 platform that underpins the Discovery Sport. The 45X hatchback on the other hand uses the Alpha platform. Both products feature Tata's Impact Design 2.0 design language.

Under the skin, the Tata H5X is expected to get a Fiat-sourced 140 BHP, 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine. It is the same engine that powers its segment rival - the Jeep Compass. A 7-seater version of the H5X is also rumoured to be in development. It is expected to get a retuned version of the 2.0-litre, Multijet diesel unit with 180 BHP. Transmission options might include a 6-speed manual and a 9-speed ZF automatic. Both SUVs are expected to get Tata's own 4WD system and an all-independent suspension.



The Tata 45X (X451) is likely to receive a tuned version of the 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine that powers the Tiago. Other options might include a 1.2-litre, turbocharged petrol from the Nexon and a 1.05-litre diesel replete with a variable geometry turbocharger (VGT).

Great Product . I feel below also need to be right for a success.
- How fast they can launch it. I end up as a Duster Owner after Waiting Storme for a long time.(I am happy with Duster, still sometimes I am missing 400Nm Torque of Storme).
- Improved customer experience. Negativity due to initial niggles if any can be easily overcome if the customer experience of handling those cases are exceptional.I feel in that area, Tata is still not up to the mark of Mahindra
especially how they treat XUV customers.
- A 4x4. Atleast It can pull an additional crowd like me.Even if the 4x4 is an option, I dont think it will be available for lower variants.
- Pricing. I don't know what is right pricing without seeing it in actual.

With H5X and H7X, what would be the fate of reasonable successful Hexa ?
I don't see why would anyone pick Hexa/Strome when they've LR based SUVs which i presume would be lighter, faster and safer.

I hope they'd have Automatic variants right from the word go. There is good demand there and TATA should captialise on this.

Strome i presume would be available only for our Armed forces !
But Hexa ? Would it be discontinued ?

Not this again! There have been multiple discussions on this in other relevant threads. Request you to do a cursory search. Just like Maruti, these multiple models will and should co-exist at these price points and some feel H7X to be priced above Hexa. Its too early to speculate.
Request you to visit the other relevant thread and the 'fate of the Hexa' will be revealed to you!

Thanks bro, you have added these pictures here. Actually my son took those pictures. I was driving at that time.

Finally I saw the SUV closely. The height and width definitely bigger then Creta/Duster etc. But not in a full size SUV (TFort/Endy) range.

The driver was driving that beast very slowly, seems he was testing the drivability in city traffic condition.
