A little intriguing is the 3 bulges on the front of this one. Quite different from the streamlined bonnet lines of the concept and the one with the Discovery Body shell.

There is quite a bit of space on the right of these two (towards the divider). And there seem to be some parking space markings where the first (foreground) vehicle is.

Spot on, manufacturers tell the test drivers to cover the car whenever the drivers are not near to the vehicles for long duration. If covers are not available then most likely drivers take turns patrolling the vehicles to avoid people from clicking pictures.

Other news from my sources is H5X siblings might get dual zone climate control and more than 2 airbags on offer. 4WD system will be the best ever Tata has put on any Tata car.

At a recent interaction, Rajendra Petkar, CTO, Tata Motors, explained how the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) norms could necessitate the inclusion of hybrids and electric vehicles in the manufacturer's line-up and how that means a hybrid H5X could be a possibility some time down the road.

He hinted at the fact that there could also be a petrol engine option on offer.

"What is going to dictate the powertrain strategy in the time to come is how we would like the consumer to perceive our car. The H5X, being an SUV, sporty, stylish kind of vehicle, we're going to offer the performance, which matches or exceeds that of the vehicles in that class. If you look at the trends, the kind of reduction that is happening in the price between diesel and petrol, the natural tendency is to go towards petrol. Therefore, there is a play not just for diesel, but also for petrol engines."

Interestingly, the Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced (OMEGA) platform on which the production H5X will be built can also be modified for electric vehicle applications. Tata is also working on advanced battery tech for future EVs so theoretically an electric H5X could also be a possibility.

A petrol engine is great news. I hope its a new high-displacement engine, and not a highly tuned turbo-charged version of the 1.2 Revotron that's doing duty on the Nexon.

I'd be keen on a petrol-electric hybrid even if the hybrid had only a 50km range. Will make most city commutes zero fuel with the option to enjoy the petrol on outstation trips.

Tata don't spend too much time thinking about it - they need to be selling in 2020/21 at the latest. Will be a great package and cater to a market not as price sensitive as the Tigor.

Spotted doing high-altitude testing in Ooty by an IAB reader.

The test mule is not production-ready as evident from the makeshift headlights, tail lights and bumpers. However, the slopey profile of the upcoming Tata SUV is quite clear in these spy shots. Compared to the concept, the production version's roofline is more in favour of rear passenger headroom.

I tried superimposing a H7X mule on a discovery pic in the side profile and there there seems to be almost no difference in length or height. There are only minor variations.

Was the mule with camouflage ? Even otherwise, the two would be quite identical. But for the comparison you tried, it would not be very accurate because the two pics you would have used would have been taken at different times / distances and hence not very suitable for comparison by superimposing.

Yes a camouflage one. I agree about the accuracy bit but does give an idea of how they compare.
