Re: Tata Motors @ Auto Expo 2018

The Hexa and H5X should coexist. The Hexa is essentially more geared to the MUV crowd while the H5X 7 seater should be to the SUV crowd with a proper 4WD and a low ratio. Having said that I think the segment is overpriced in India with vehicles such as the Creta and Fortuner. If they aim for too much over the Hexa which in spite of being an excellent car does not sell as much it will go the way of the Aria. IMHO the H5X 7 seater should have their top variant below 20 to get any serious sales. They need to rebuild the brand.

The 5 seater cannot be a Safari as its always been a 7 seater. I think they should revive the Sierra brand with the 5 seater and Safari with the 7 seater to build on the brand names which have immediate recall and iconic legacy. Granted the platform is from JLR but its the Tata legacy that they need to build on. The proper positioning for the H5X would be with the 5 seater in the space between the Nexon and Hexa with overlap on the lower variants of Hexa and the 7 seater overlapping with the upper variants. Thus they will cover most of the spectrum and eat into the overpriced Fortuners sales too.

If the torque is reduced from 170 Nm of the Nexon to 150 Nm in the Tiago JTP (read detuned), the Tiago would deliver near 20 kmpl in the ARAI due to lower kerb weight, unless the tuning is super aggressive. Know that Tiago petrol 1.2 NA delivers 23.xx in ARAI results and the Nexon petrol around 17.

Also, while there will be some weight additions, this will tip the scales in excess of 1 ton and should be lesser than the GT TSI than about 50-75 Kgs.
Now the GT TSI shaves more than a second from its own MT due to the quick shifting DSG in the 0-100 run. Doubtful if the JTP will beat the GT TSI in the 0-100 though will be close (guess 1 sec more), but then it will cost near 4 lakhs lesser as well.

Nevertheless, its a superb car to look froward to. There was a thread by GTO sometime back on what enthusiasts car can you buy in 6 lakhs. This one goes on top of that list for just a lakh more on road speculatively. But again it will be a brand new car.

Not sure how the mass market would perceive it - but this will surely stir a wave of emotions among enthusiasts like us.

Sierra was a three door though, and some might argue. But in terms of size and presence, I do totally agree with you.

From the time I remember TATA showcased the Magna in one of the AutoExpos, TATA has come a long way and has always put on a bold show.

Kudos to TATA. An Indian Carmaker to be proud of.

There is no mention of the new MPV that Tata were working on? Also no mention of the Q501 and Q502 models that were discussed so much?

Q501 is the H5X concept. Q502 is the seven seater variant and should be revealed later.
