Smart Card DL's and Registration info - Finally

Hi,

Read this in the Indian Express a few days back that the RTA , Mumbai has decided to go ahead with the Smart Card Licences. It will cost 200 Rs.

Also , the registration info that we have on a rag tag RC book is being converted to a Smart Card. This will be available for 350 Rs.

Hopefully these should be available Jan 2007 onwards.

Will try and source a link to the article.

Cheers

Oh yeah! Rub it in some more....

I tried to change address on my DL at the local RTO and they only had books, just like my Dad had 40 years back. They have only heard of credit card type DLs, so I ran out of there like the monsoon wind. I am keeping my Bangalore DL. :-(

Finally the silly multi-page book which gets worn and torn for a replacement every three years is replaced. Smart Cards should also help eliminate the practice of people holding multiple licences.

I hope they will also address the digital divide problem, or else this smart card will solve nothing. City folks may procure DLs from smaller towns and still escape detection. They should force all RTOs to go digital, and ban all paper licenses.

UPDATE

Read in todays Indian Express - people getting new licenses on 25th Dec will be the first batch to get the smart card licenses and after a month they will start issuing the smart card licenses to existing license holders.

And the Registration Optical card - will be available only at the Tardeo RTO and in a months time from the Andheri RTO. The others do not have the facilities to issue the Smart Card Registration details.

Sounds like the same old story now..................sigh

Dont know if smart cards can help that much, unless the DL itself is tied to any other un-changeable reference number - one that cannot be manipulated. A person can still go to another location to get a fresh licence.

Samurai, hopefully the digital divide should go away in the fore-see-able future. Governments are waking up to digitizing services, changing the way services are delivered, resulting in a centralization of some things & de-centralization of others. Transportation or any other area wouldnt remain islands in the system. eg: Karnataka Govt itself has a lot of projects in progress, and so is the central govt. [I can say this as I am working on one of these projects].
