Renault-Nissan overtakes VW to become world's no.1 carmaker

Renault-Nissan has overtaken Volkswagen to become the world's no.1 carmaker in terms of sales in 2017.

While Nissan registered record global sales of 5.82 million last year, Renault clocked 3.76 million units. In 2016, the group acquired a controlling stake in Mitsubishi. The Japanese brand sold 1.03 million vehicles in 2017 bringing the group's final sales tally to 10.61 million units.

Renault-Nissan is hoping to increase its annual sales volumes to 14 million units by 2022. The carmaker is aiming to double its savings to US$ 12 billion by then. Renault-Nissan is trying to increase sales volumes to achieve economies of scale and cut costs by sharing platforms and vehicles parts across its brands. Through this, the company is attempting to reduce R&D and manufacturing costs and increase profitability.

The Volkswagen Group comprising of Audi, Porsche, Skoda and Seat registered combined sales of 10.53 million units in 2016. Toyota sold 10.2 million cars in 2017 and was placed third.

Looks like there's an error somewhere - this report of today says VW Group is number one above Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi:

Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi are indeed the new No.1. Clarification:

Ghosn said the VW tally was lower if its Scania and MAN heavy trucks were excluded.

"The [Renault-Nissan] alliance, with more than 10.6 million light private and commercial vehicles sold in 2017, is the premier global automobile group," Ghosn told a parliamentary committee hearing in Paris on Wednesday

"That has just been confirmed after Volkswagen this morning announced its sales of 10.74 million, including 200,000 heavy trucks, which we do not include in our statistics," Ghosn said. "There can be no further discussion" on who is now top, he said.

Re: Renault-Nissan overtakes VW to become world's no.1 carmaker

And both are struggling in India, more or less. I guess majority of Indians would not even identify what Nissan does (confusing it with the sauce/noodle maker with similar name) and even more would not be able to pronounce Volkswagen & Renault correctly

One is yet to see "sunny" days, other one thinks it can "Captur" the market with offerings which does not offer what customers are looking for. Another one is happy making metro coaches rather than cars. VW is just milking its polo horse since eternity.

It looks like the Worlds largest "carmaker" is a statistic introduced very recently.

It has always been worlds largest "automaker". There is no statistic of worlds largest carmaker published for earlier years.

Looks like this may be Ghosn's idea.

The New Car King - Renault/Nissan/Mitsubishi Alliance

VOLKSWAGEN GROUP SLAYED BY RENAULT PARTLY DUE TO DIESEL SCAM

Until late the mass of brands accumulated by the Volkswagen Group (includes Audi and Porsche) seemed invincible.

They had marched to the peak of the auto world overtaking the Japanese Masters of the Universe - Toyota!

But alas, they had to pay a dear price for rigging up their diesel cars with cheat software that would recognize when the cars are stationary undergoing pollution check to satisfy the emission norms but while on the roads these diesels would belch upto 10 times their stated environmental goals!!!

Well now a new competitor has been crowned in the global auto scene.

HAIL THE NEW AUTO KING - Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance rule the roost today, selling 10.6 million cars (more than VW and Toyota) twenty years since the first two started walking down the path hand in hand.

Renault has been successful in Europe with Dacia (the Renault Duster sold here sells as Dacia Duster there) while Nissan is trying to cultivate Datsun as the low cost warrior in India, Indonesia, Russia and South Africa.

You can read more about this in the article in The Economist:

Re: The New Car King - Renault/Nissan/Mitsubishi Alliance

From the article, the yearly (2017 sales) standings are -

1. Renault+Nissan+Mitsubishi
2. VW+Skoda
3. Toyota
4. GM
5. Hyundai+Kia

But in India, the rankings are
1. Suzuki
2. Hyundai
3. Mahindra
4. Honda
5. Tata

Even if you add their individual sales, Renault+Nissan+Mitsubhi, or VW+Skoda miss the top 5 mark by some margin. GM is nowhere to be seen. Hyundai is probably the only company to figure in both lists. Toyota comes a close 6th.

What happens to these international giants when it comes to our country? Why have they failed to make an impact in our market? What's the problem?

Inferior products? Pricey products? Brand perception? Too lazy? Or is it the consumer itself?

I think they just cant compete with Maruti Suzuki in any department except safety. Maruti beats all cars from these manufacturers in India with some model or the other.

Re: The New Car King - Renault/Nissan/Mitsubishi Alliance

Its the sentiments and perception that rules the roost in India. Maruti (Suzuki) is perceived to be a long term "bharosemand" (trustworthy) brand whereas all other companies are deemed to be "Phoren" due to lack of awareness/knowledge in the eyes of an average person.
Hyundai being an "outsider" has managed to crack the code a bit. Other companies can definitely get there, provided they are willing to be patient and be committed to the cause.
Consider this as an example - Fiat was one of the oldest players in India and yet they somehow lost the plot by not being committed enough and rest as we all know is history. They are still struggling to make a footing in the India Auto scene after multiple entry/exit attempts.

Brand perception and awareness is definitely a factor, but the single largest contributor is the market maturity.

Having grown up on a steady diet of Ambassadors and Premier Padminis for decades, Indians still like to go for very simple and basic cars and don't like paying more for feature sets which are commonplace internationally. Then there is the significant gap in purchasing power too. In some cases due to cultural differences, infrastructure issues, these advanced features are not practical either.

Most of the top five players in that international list don't operate in this uniquely Indian low cost basic segment. Any global player who is willing and able to tweak their product range to match this market tastes success.

Suzuki fundamentally is a small car manufacturer, doesn't even make it to the top 10 lists in most developed markets. In India, due to their history, they have simplified their small car expertise even further and has been immensely successful doing that.

Re: Renault-Nissan overtakes VW to become world's no.1 carmaker

2018 - Renault-Nissan alliance keeps No. 1 spot for global light vehicle sales, outpacing VW, Toyota.

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance sold 10.76 million light vehicles globally last year, outpacing rivals Volkswagen Group and Toyota if heavy truck sales are excluded from their sales results.

Quote:
Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors together sold 10.76 million passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in 2018, according to Reuters' calculations after new data was released on Wednesday.

VW Group registrations rose 0.9 percent to 10.83 million , including its MAN and Scania heavy trucks, the company said earlier this month. Excluding heavy trucks, it sold 10.6 million units.

Toyota had sold 10.59 million vehicles last year including its Toyota and Lexus brands, along with minicars made by subsidiary Daihatsu, and light and heavy trucks produced by its truck division Hino Motors. Excluding Hino trucks, Toyota sold 10.39 million units.
