Rumour: Corolla Altis Hybrid to get Maruti's 1.5L petrol engine

The upcoming Ciaz Hybrid will reportedly be powered by Maruti Suzuki's new 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine. Media reports suggest that the same engine could be used in a car supplied by Toyota to Maruti as part of their tie up.

The 1.5-litre petrol engine has already been launched on the second-generation Ertiga in the Southeast Asian market. It produces 103 BHP of peak power and 138 Nm of torque. Maruti Suzuki's SHVS mild hybrid system adds fuel saving measures like idle start-stop, torque assist and brake energy regeneration. The new engine is set to replace the smaller 1.4-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine.

SHVS is currently offered on the diesel variants of the Ertiga, Ciaz and S-Cross in India. Maruti is also developing a new 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel to replace the Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre unit.

As part of the Toyota-Suzuki partnership, both carmakers have decided to share each other's models to strengthen their respective positions in the Indian market. The companies have announced that Toyota will be supplying Suzuki with the Corolla sedan, while the latter will share the Baleno and Vitara Brezza. Further, the re-badged cars will be sold via the brand's respective retail outlets.

Found a pretty good rendering of the possible (future) Toyota Baleno:

Re: Toyota & Suzuki to supply cars to each other in India

Let me be the devil's advocate here- I believe there is more to it than meets the eye.
-There's some disquiet in the auto industry regarding emission standards that are coming through in 2020.
-Toyota wants to diversify its small car portfolio (delhi diesel court ruling).
-Suzuki's non-success in the premium segments.
-Fewer automakers left standing (non-China), hence realignment (Mitsubishi + Nissan + Renault)
-Suzuki is becoming more dependent on India (It earns super-normal profits here but this market is becoming very competitive, growth and profits are in the premium and small cars, Toyota and Suzuki have their strengths respectively).
-Possible effect of uncertainty in Chinese markets, with a possible trade war.

And lastly, as with emissions, the larger threat is that of EVs (and charging stations). Automakers aligning, joint development of battery plants, charging points..CHAdeMO vs Ev plug Alliance

Re: Toyota & Suzuki to supply cars to each other in India

Baleno has been approved by both the headquarters in Japan as the first vehicle to come out of this Partnership.

Will roll out from the TKM unit at Bidadi- Bengaluru from Q1 FY-19.

Quote:
Baleno will undergo some minor changes in its exteriors and interiors such as head lamps, tail lamps and front grill, before being re-badged as a Toyota.

Re: Toyota & Suzuki to supply cars to each other in India

From Maruti Suzuki's side, Corolla version is expected to debut in 2020.

Big news here is Toyota's Corolla will use Suzuki's 1.5 liter petrol engine that will debut in India on the Ciaz.

Apart from Ertiga , later the same engine will power more cars from Maruti’s stable, like Brezza, S-Cross, etc.

While I can understand the 1.5L powering Brezza, S-Cross etc, it is not making sense on a car like Corolla !! You mean the maruti version of the Corolla ? It will be pretty boring unless they add some turbo.

Toyota already offered 1.5L on Yaris and on paper suzuki engine sounds similar to that on Yaris. So does Toyota gain anything significantly ?

Re: Toyota & Suzuki to supply cars to each other in India

Will the Baleno from Toyota have the same sheet metal? I hope they provide a different grade sheet metal for the Toyota Baleno. Everything about Baleno is awesome including CVT except for the grade of sheet metal that has been used

This engine may have a different tune for Toyota, for some more torque and power.

And let us remember, the power and torque ratings are the peak ratings. We seldom (probably never) extract the peak torque or power. If a diesel engine has say 150 N m toque rating in 1500 - 3500 rpm band, that is how much it CAN produce. But it WILL produce only whatever is sufficient to overcome the actual load.

Re: Toyota & Suzuki to supply cars to each other in India

I feel that Toyota will source the Exports variant of the Baleno, why

1) Toyota will not want to tarnish its brand image by selling the existing domestic Baleno which has poor build quality - The exports variants i'm sure has better build quality

2) This in turn will help to maintain a price gap between the MSIL Baleno & Toyota Baleno model & prevent cannibalization

However, it seems that even Toyota is not confident of selling the model as Suzuki will only supply 25,000 Baleno's per year which makes it 2,085 units per month & with approx 250 Toyota sales outlet pan India, each outlet will only be supplied with less than 10 cars/month.

What if the vehicles allocated to each dealer sell off like hot cakes & the dealer principal requires more Balenos ?

Am I missing something here ?

Toyota and Suzuki Alliance to roll out Electric and Hybrid cars.

Quote:
The Toyota-Suzuki alliance is readying a host of electric and hybrid vehicles for the Indian market as the government places a strong emphasis on cleaner and greener mobility solutions to address the rising pollution challenge and fuel import bill
Four electrified models are likely to be ready by 2020-21 and shared between the two Japanese automakers

Quote:
Apart from pure electric vehicles, a range of hybrid options are likely to be shared between the two companies, such as the Baleno, Vitara Brezza and Corolla.

Re: Toyota & Suzuki to supply cars to each other in India

All this sounds like Toyota does not want to invest lot of money in developing electric vehicles and Suzuki is desperate and does not want to be left behind as they don't have technology. Issue for Suzuki is they picked the wrong horse. Toyota has been selling these mild-hybrids under Prius brand for almost 2 decades and Prius prime (plug-in Hybrid) is only improved marginally in these 2 decades. This is despite drastic improvement in battery technology for the last 8-10 years. Suzuki should have tied up with Nissan, Chevy or even BYD which have proper electric vehicles already in market and also with decent EV road maps.

I am glad that govt is not subsidizing these so-called electrified vehicles or mild-hybrids under FAME-II. This will hurt plug-in hybrids with batteries in the short term but we hardly have them in India despite being available worldwide for many years.

Start-ups like Ather energy are able to design, develop and produce full-electric scooter in 5 years that are comparable or even better than worldwide competition. They are even setting up charging stations ahead of deliveries. But major companies are still complaining that there is no market for EVs in India, there is no charging infrastructure, etc... Mahindra bought Reva almost a decade back but there is hardly any development under that brand when EVs are actually getting more and more popular and batteries are getting cheaper.

Toyota to make Suzuki cars at Bengaluru plant - ample free capacity to be utilized,

Toyota Motor Corp. has agreed to produce Suzuki Motor Corp.’s cars to utilize the idle capacity at its Bengaluru factory, widening the alliance between the two companies in India.

although the vehicles will be made by Toyota, Suzuki will be involved in some capacity. Both companies may also decide to sell these vehicles under their own brand names

Win-Win for everyone, Toyota uses idle capacities and Maruti gets a manufacturing base in South and saves on the Overheads. In my opinion this must have been decided right at the Top. Now it will be interesting to see how Toyota manage cost of production at same levels like Suzuki! And will Toyota have any say in the designs or component QC? Or do they make start with something completely new vehicle from Nexa range where Maruti may afford to price it higher?
