Re: March 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Upon perusing the top and the not so top sellers, certain facts emerge :-

(1) The Maruti Omni completes nearly 34 years (arrived as the Van in 1984 but renamed as the Omni in 1988) of manufacture from the same assembly line viz. Gurgaon and still retains its sheen at # 15 in the list of top sellers. The Fiat 1100 Delight (launched 1965 by PAL) was manufactured till 1998 (33 years) under different names and lastly as the Premier Padmini S 1 and Premier 137 D. The Omni beats the Fiat 1100/ Premier Padmini as a car being made from the same assembly line, as the former has completed 34 years. The Ambassador holds the unbeaten world record with 56 years.

(2) The Scorpio though ageing, continues to be the bread and butter for M & M along with the Bolero, another ageing utility vehicle. The XUV 500 sales are dwindling and maybe buyers are awaiting its refreshed version due soon. The KUV and TUV report mediocre sales, but not so low as to cull these. The K and TUV have never been good sellers though. The Verito/ Vibe and the Nuvo Sport may be on their firing line, as these ain't going anywhere. The Xylo sales too are on the down slide.

(3) Fiat and Mitsubishi are the wonders of our car industry, that keep going on and on, year after year, irrespective of whether anyone buys their products or not ?

(4) Skoda and VW remain as laggards and very little efforts are being made to spruce up their brand image by the respective companies. Despite the fact that some of their dealers have made these white elephants as far as maintenance is concerned, the USP of these cars is that they are much, much safer (Fiat and Ford included) than the best selling Japanese and Korean cars. The safety factor is never well advertised by these companies. A mere scroll through the "Accidents in India " thread here will reveal so many accidents, where the safer European cars have withstood impacts and have saved lives.

Re: March 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

While its great to applaud these sales numbers, I just wonder what the sales would be once we enforce Airbags and ABS on every car sold. With the additional costs, we could well see a downward spiral of about 25% or more, especially in the under INR 7,00,000 category of cars.

Who is this one person every month picking up the VW Jetta? It's been quite sometime since the company stopped its production and it is surprising that it is still managing to find that lone buyer.

On the same note, I am searching for the one who will buy the overpriced Honda Accord. Not sure what Honda will do with the pricing of upcoming CRV.

Re: March 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Here is the FY18 complete story:

- 3 million sales mark in FY17, passenger vehicles created a new milestone in 2017-18 reaching sales of 3.3 million units.

- domestic passenger vehicles (PV) grew by 7.9 percent driven by double digit growth in the utility vehicle segment.

- PVs almost 30 percent of the domestic sales come from the rural markets

- In the PV segment, new products launched at the right time with right market positioning, at right price point and fully loaded with features in sync with customer expectations contributed to the growth. For instance, the Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Swift, etc.

-growing consumer shift towards UVs which contributed the highest growth of 20.97 percent in FY18 gave a fillip to the passenger vehicle market.

-Maruti Suzuki India as usual led the market with sales of 1643467 units, an uptick of 13.84 percent. The carmaker upped its market share to 50 percent from 47.38 percent in FY17 on the back of a strong product performance.

- Hyundai grew 5.21 percent in domestic sales to 536241 units in FY18, its market share slipped marginally from 16.73 percent to 16.31 percent

- Mahindra & Mahindra though growing 5.39 percent in terms of domestic sales to 248859 units saw a slight slip in market share to 7.57 percent in FY18 from 7.75 percent an year earlier.

-Tata Motors however gained market share at 6.39 percent in FY18 from the earlier 5.66 percent in the previous fiscal.

Is the Nexon sales limited by production capacity for this model? It would appear that their production capacity is stretched as far as this production is concerned.

Re: March 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Looking at the numbers, Fiat would be the next Chevrolet I believe. They should either refresh their product portfolio or they should better stop selling cars in India. It is part mistake on Fiat and part mistake on the market too. An enthusiast's car like Abarth Punto has a very lukewarm response in our country and Fiat's linea and Punto are so old that they could be kept in the museum which might give a better revenue to Fiat. Why can't Fiat give the 1.6 multijet at least to the Punto and Linea?

FCA's plan of making India the manufacturing hub for all the RHD markets is the only consoling statement else Fiat would've been long gone from India.

Fiat's service and parts availability is another headache. Their body shop quality is comparable to the road side ones where most cabbies go to fix their dented rides. The only satisfaction is how well the car drives. I own a Punto and whenever I take it out for a spin, it never fails to put a smile on my face.

Half hearted approach of the company and service killing the brand in India, might be the end of new fiat cars on our roads.

Re: March 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

So MSIL is now firmly owning half of the sales of the 3m+ passenger vehicles sold in a year. In the top 6, 4 products are newly launched products viz swift, dzire, baleno and brezza which is a dream for any company.

Wagon-R sales numbers are so consistent that they defy all logic thrown around for high sales like new technology, new design, product re-launch etc. etc. What defines the consistent high sales of Wagon-R ?

I think the taxi segment is a huge contributor to the wagon R sales. Ola, uber and other taxi providers prefer wagon R as a mini cab in their fleet. Desire is also a popular choice among cab providers.

Re: March 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

One quick observation;

1) Safari Storme sales - is it because they’ve considered deliveries done to army here? A sudden spike in the sales numbers came as a surprise. But, the beast deserves its throne! Or am I missing something?

2) Polo - if it’s the diesel, no doubt people are still buying it consistently. But if it’s petrol variant, is it the sales numbers achieved for clearing the old stock with bigger petrol variant? Are people considering the smaller 1.0L engine on the polo over its bigger sized engine that was pulled out of the line?

I don’t think the reviews were positive or satisfying.

Thanks

Many factors defines its never ending popularity.

1)I have a 2012 CNG (Green) Wagon R that is just shy of 1,60,000 kms.
It is still extremely reliable. I am confident that even after such a high mileage, the car will not give me a miss on the highway.
2)Maintenance is pocket change if you do it regularly.
Mileage is something that will paste a smile on your face, everytime you visit the bunk. Petrol FE on highways is always in excess of 18kmpl.
The Best FE I could get is 36.5 km/kg of CNG. Its astronomical.
3) The car is spacious of a family of 04. Good head room, good leg room, good visibility(A Pillar Blindness nevertheless) all round.
4) Driveability. Its easy to drive. Nothing more than a reliable, no nonsense point A-B commuter. Dont look for the fun part here
5) High on resale. Yes.Wagon R is one of the more sough after vehicles in the used car market. Resale is on the higher side.

You are right, Its an old model, old platform and a decade old design. Yet, with its inherent virtues, it will continue to sell the way it is.
And BTW, Taxis/Fleet are not the only guys contributing to its legacy!!

Compact Sedan Jan-Mar'18

Lower levels indicate higher demand, & higher level of indicate a sales push.

Re: March 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Captur seems to have settled at around 300 units per month, a number which the company should never be contended with. Sad to see a product put on ventilator within few months of its birth.

Albeit Renault, of late, has been aggressive with advertisements of the Captur, it seems much more efforts are to be made forthwith by the marketing team to resurrect the product. In my opinion, Renault has to announce substantial cut down on the pricing to make it more appealing. With dwindling numbers of the Duster and Kwid doing numbers which are almost half of what it did a year ago, Renault relied heavily on the performance of the Captur in the Indian market. With the Captur not generating enough steam, Renault needs to execute plan B and bring another mass appeal product which can bring home volumes.

Presently the Ciaz, City and the Verna are dominating the B2 Sedan segment. With Yaris entering into the market, it would be interesting to see how the equations change and these leaders stand against one another. Keeping fingers crossed.

Re: March 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Captur cannot be saved. Now they have put out an ad in which the poor guy - Ranbir Kapoor - is mouthing those cringe worthy punch line no ad maker should have wrote: "Looks can be deceiving". They are admitting that the car is not selling, and admits that it might be because of the looks. This will only scare buyers away.

Anyway am personally happy that the Kaptur failed.
