2018 Hyundai i20 Active launched at Rs. 6.99 lakh

Hyundai has silently launched the updated i20 Active in India with prices starting at Rs. 6.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The cross-hatch now comes with dual-tone exterior colour options and new features. Unlike the Euro-spec i20 Active facelift, the Indian version is based on the pre-facelift Elite i20.

The i20 Active measures 3,995 mm in overall length, 1,760 mm in width and 1,555 mm in height, which is 50 mm more than the standard Elite i20. Both cars have an identical wheelbase of 2,570 mm.

On the outside, the i20 Active gets contrasting colour options for the roof. It retains its trapezoidal grille, which is flanked by circular fog lamps, while the front bumper has a silver scuff plate. The headlights come equipped with projectors and LED DRLs. At the rear, the car gets circular fog lamps and a bumper with silver scuff plate. It has a roof spoiler and black trim on the tailgate lip. The i20 Active gets black plastic cladding around the wheel arches and along the doorsills. It also gets silver roof rails. Besides this, the i20 Active rides on multi-spoke alloy wheels.

It now supports Android Auto, Apple CarPlay as well as Mirror Link. The car also gets an adjustable front centre armrest and the rear armrest now has cup holders.

Giving a regular / simple car a dual-tone paint job to spice things up is the latest trend. As with most trends, Maruti popularised it (Vitara Brezza).

I never understood that. The only time a dual color on a car looks good, is when only the roof is of a different color, or when the hood is (that is only if it's carbon fiber for weight reduction). Else I find do find dual tone cars quite ugly myself. Whether it's i20 or Aventador.

Well, i am sceptical to see which class of customer would want to buy it.

The Good:It retains the Old Elite's tail Lamps, i find em more classy compared to new one.
The Bad: Still no Automatic Transmission.
The Ugly: Dual Tone looks awkward IMHO.

Is this the facelift? If it is, this is one of the most subtle facelifts and I can't figure what is different in this car. Even the rear is from the pre-facelift version.

On another note, the dual tone variant, apart from looking hideous in blue and white combo, is priced over 10 lakhs. They could price it lower by Rs. 1331 to save additional 1% tax for their customer's benefit.

Isnt this the most stupid pricing decision ever.. In bangalore the Rs 1K they added to ex-showroom will increase on-road price by over 30K, forget alone the hassles with TCS..

Not sure if its right to compare i20 Active and Freestyle. I reckon both of them belong to the fledgling "raised hatch" segment.

Just a casual look at the pricing, I believe Freestyle is a much more VFM offering. Similar featured petrol variants on i20 attract 1.5L more than Freestyle whereas the difference is 2L and more in diesel. Can't exactly say the engines on i20 Active are more powerful than Freestyle. Now the question I ask is, whether such premium is justified for a bigger touchscreen and more convenience overall? Also, the lack of an automatic option is a missed opportunity considering the fact that Freestyle too doesn't come with it.

The i20 is much more feature packed than the freestyle. It gets cooled glovebox, rear AC vents, now it also gets rear cup holders, speed dependent audio levels, isofix mounts, projectors, DRLs, etc. Freestyle is based on a budget hatch and although they've added a few more features compared to the Figo, it still isn't as equipped in terms of features as the Hyundai.

The biggest USP of freestyle has to be safety. If Ford does not advertise it a lot, it's being stupid. But like many have said, in India looks and mileage sells, not safety.

Hyundai seems to have um.. borrowed several design cues from Ford (which in turn borrowed some - such as the bold front grille - from Aston Martin)

Take a look at the Facelifted i20 and then the 2018 Accent .. and compare that to the 2014 All New Fiesta.

I once saw a 2018 Accent some days back and thought I was looking at my Fiesta that I'd left parked at home.

I am sure one more such post may be coming some day on the forum again (Or maybe in some newspaper) and our sweet @DrHoneyCake will say 'thanks' to Hyundai that day

And lesser performance in both petrol and diesel, everything at a price around 2-2.5 lac higher than the Freestyle. In other words - you are right! They both belong to different segments and we hope that they are targeted towards different customers too.
