1,00,000th Mercedes rolls off the production line in Chakan

Mercedes-Benz has rolled out the 1,00,000th car from its production line at Chakan near Pune. It took the company 23 years to achieve this milestone. The 1,00,000th car to be produced by the brand in India happened to be an E-Class.

Mercedes-Benz India Pvt. Ltd. was founded in 1994. The W124 E-Class was the first model that was locally built at the Pimpri plant back in 1995. The 20,000th vehicle was built in 2008 followed by the 30,000th vehicle 2 years later. In 2014, the 50,000th car rolled out of the Chakan plant.

Mercedes-Benz currently offers a wide range of products in the luxury car segment. Its line up includes the CLA, C-Class, E-Class and S-Class sedans and SUVs like the GLA, GLC, GLE and GLS. Mercedes-Benz also offers high-performance models from its AMG line up in addition to the Mercedes-Maybach S 650 limousine. Mercedes' India plant is the only place in the world where the RHD version of the E-Class LWB is assembled and the only factory outside the European Union that builds the RHD version of the S-Class.

So it took them 13 years to sell 20,000 cars, but only another 10 years to sell the next 80,000. Another one = Mercedes took 19 years to sell 50,000 cars, and just 4 years to sell the next 50,000. God bless the growing Indian economy (although Mercedes' cheaper entry-level range is also a big contributor).

I'm willing to bet that Mercedes will be the first luxury car maker to reach the 2,00,000 car milestone too. The company is an unstoppable force right now, thanks in no small part to their amazing designs. Audi & BMW also make fantastic cars, but Mercedes' styling is what really sets it apart. Audi's cars look the same as they always did (I like that though), BMW has gone all weird and Lexus is u-g-l-y.
