Rumour: Tata's RaceMo sports car project up for sale

Sad to see that TaMo has been put up for sale.

Good engineering efforts don't get rewarded in India. That's why most companies focus on selling generic and often overpriced models developed for global markets. People would gladly pay 30 lakhs for a Prius but flinch at the price tag of an indigenously made electric sports car because it is from Tata.

Ummm, as far as I can glean from this thread, this "sports" car was never put up for sale, no bookings collected; so where does the basis for your criticism originate ? It's not as if Tata put up the car for sale for months & nobody bought it, right ?

It appears, at least to me , that if anybody had doubts about the viability of this Tata product, it's the company itself, so why blame the car-buying public ?

Not that it matters, but if one looks at the Prius sales numbers for the past 6 months, not a single one has been sold, so it's not like anybody "gladly paid 30 lakhs" for one. That said, at least Toyota still has the Prius on sale despite the non-existent sales numbers, talk about confidence in their product

Toyota Prius is still on sale because they just import it whenever someone place an order. India was never a main market for prius. Toyota have developed the car for other markets where it sells in good numbers and generate the money. India is a main market for Tata and if Tata wants to launch the car in Indian market then they also need to think seriously about recovering the investment of Racemo project. It is not about the confidence

TATA cars have perception of both reliability and service issues. They may be trying to change the former with new set of cars, but the service is still poor. People don't know how to fix problems, spare parts not available and I can always see 100s of cars stationed in service areas jostling for space. They can't even park the cars properly and I used to worry about cars getting scratches there. They still need to do a lot of work on changing the perception before trying to convince people to buy expensive cars like this.

Re: Rumour: Tata's RaceMo sports car project up for sale

While, it hurts to see a car like the RaceMo being axed, especially for enthusiasts like us, it makes more sense for a company like Tata Motors to concentrate on more mass market products at a time when the wheels of transformation have been set rolling with models like the Nexon and Tiago.

Perhaps, we might see other sporty models under the TaMo sub-brand in the future or even a "people's sports car".

Does anyone here think that Jayem may buy the project and pursue independently with tacit support from TML?
