As part of the cosmetic package, all three models get black roof wrap, 'Sport' decals on the sides, black rear spoiler and faux carbon ORVM housings. There are no mechanical changes to these Sport Editions for their regular counterparts. The company is also conducting a slogan writing competition. Prospective customers who test drive any Volkswagen car can submit a slogan of their choice. The winner will get a chance to win a Sport Edition car.

1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrol with 75 BHP / 95 Nm - I wonder what sport will the car be used for - Bullock racing perhaps

I don't know if our market is that bad that people don't care a wee bit for the mechanicals or if the manufacturers don't get it. Pasting an RS (Maruti) or sport sticker with no change in the car otherwise dooesn't make it sporty. Imagine if this "Sport" version is smoked by a regular i20

re: Volkswagen launches lame Sport Editions of the Polo, Ameo & Vento

As per an article I read a few days back, Volkswagen claims that their Petrol Polo & Ameo account for more than 50% of sales. Now, it seems they want to push their diesels more hence they've plonked the twins with such an underpowered engine. In fact, I'm extremely sure that the sales for the same would have gone down quite a bit because the 1.0 MPi isn't even Peppy in the urban environment, let alone anything else.
The Sports moniker only applies to the Ameo diesel though that one vehicle is nothing less than a bomb!
Compact, quick and with decent space along with equipment on offer coupled with the DSG, it's one beautiful machine.

re: Volkswagen launches lame Sport Editions of the Polo, Ameo & Vento

How many more editions will VW launch?? They have a tired line up of cars available here that most people don't even consider looking into when buying a new car.

The mass market offerings are old (read: ancient) and the more expensive models like the Passat and Tiguan are outclassed and overpriced compared to the competition.

VW should work on their strengths. Higher levels of perceived build quality and safety standards is what we think when we think of Volkswagen. Asking for a Golf would unreasonable considering our market so instead, give us the UP!, bring in the new MQB Jetta, Improve ASS.

I just hope that with the new low cost MQB platform that VW is developing for emerging markets they don't go the tin can way of Honda and Maruti.

Tongue in cheek - Someone should file a case of cruelty against VW India for milking these poor products (Polo and Vento) long beyond their intended functional life! It's like they've take their 'timeless' designs a little too seriously!

re: Volkswagen launches lame Sport Editions of the Polo, Ameo & Vento

Instead of this mockery of sport editions, why can't they provide a genuine feature update to their decade old cars to bring them on par with the competition? Features are something everybody notices, in spite of whether they're enthusiasts or not. Not many would be able to recognize the other USPs like laser welding etc.

Give them the below with no major price increase and hope to continue with whatever numbers they get until the MQB platform is localized -
  • 6/7 Airbags
  • Auto Headlamps
  • Sunroof
  • Keyless go
  • The steering wheel of GTI with paddles

re: Volkswagen launches lame Sport Editions of the Polo, Ameo & Vento

When I bought my Polo TDI about 3 years back, these features - black roof wrap, carbon OVRMs and side beadings, were offered as Exquisite Edition over the High Line model. There were a few extras as well, like, window shades, carbon lining on central console, etc. Wonder they have been still selling g the same things under a new name every year.

If I were VW, I would have simply offered a free world cup football replica, and people would have bought more.

Re: Volkswagen launches lame Sport Editions of the Polo, Ameo & Vento

VW was one of the rare manufacturers who provided the customers with real mechanical upgrades such as the GT twins and the Ameo Diesel. Sad to see them resorting to such Sticker Editions like the rest of the herd. Also calling it Sport is just ironical.

For the record, the old Hyundai Santro 1.1 used to develop 96 Nm on a car weighing 850 kg. Polo petrol produces 95 Nm on a car weighing 1240 kg. They can actually have the 1.0 TSI with 95 BHP as regular Polo and may be the 1.2 TSI with around 120 BHP for the GT

Of all the manufacturers in India, Volkswagen is definitely the most dilusional.
