Re: Govt. may let carmakers import 2,500 cars/year without hassles

Global companies such as Mercedes-Benz, Toyota and Nissan back the measure.

Mercedes:
Quote:
It is a welcome move and will save us extra efforts, extra investments and extra time that was spent on homologating some of the vehicles through imports

Toyota:
The company is planning to drive in Alphard minivan people’s maker.

Quote:
With the current high cost of technology import, it is not viable to develop such high global standards locally, considering cost effectiveness, which is purely volume driven, thus limiting any nation’s technological advancements
Nissan:
Quote:
the move will enable the company to expedite the introduction of global SUVs.

Audi e-tron would likely take this route.

Re: Govt. may let carmakers import 2,500 cars/year without hassles

Ok so companies can import 2500 cars per year without having to test the car here as long as it is homologated in the country of manufacturing.

But the taxes and duties will remain same as they are now. So what happens? They will anyways not be able to price these cars well due to taxes and duties and by an extension, never be able to really test the market!!

Am I missing something?

They don't need to waste time and effort for ARAI certification of low volume cars below 3 liter engine and 40000$. This will be a welcome move for petrol heads as we can expect all sorts of fun cars to arrive in low quantities which could not be imported earlier.

This is a very very positive development IMHO.

Surprised more car manufacturers are not using this route to bring in more unique cars? Only a few have like Mercedes. Where is Skoda, VW, Volvo & BMW?

I believe they are waiting for the Elections to pass Where as Mercedes India have been habitual CBU importers irrespective of this rule.

Whatever happened to this initiative? Of course this may not be the right time for many car companies with COVID-19 and all, but Tesla is one that is bucking the trend of the global auto industry right now and is rapidly expanding. I was kinda hoping Elon Musk got wind of this and made some moves; although the exit of Deepak Ahuja as CFO has put a spanner into those dreams.

VAG India seems to have maxed out its allocation of 2,500 units for 2020.

1. VW T-Roc : 1000 units
2. Skoda Karoq : 1000 units
3. Skoda RS 245 : 200 units
4. VW Tiguan AllSpace : 300 units?
