Re: Skoda in control of VW's product development for India; car based on MQB-A0-IN platform coming

Beyond Vision IN, Rapid and similar body style replicas from VW, nothing finalized for beyond 2021.

Maybe the next localized products will come beyond 2022.

So the Russian market Rapid won't replace our aging model here? And I assume this is a new development because a page earlier he responded to new Rapid query on twitter months ago. Guess they realized the new Rapid will stray far away from current Rapid pricing so they're probably off to build something from the Vision In parts bin?

The Sedan in discussion are the Vento/ Rapid replacements. It is known the next gen Vento for Global markets is the Virtus.

The Virtus is much bigger then the Current Vento and hence the replacements too.

They will probably move up in pricing too and occupy the Jetta segment.

As Virtus is already available, the Sedan for India to hit the market will be from VW followed by the Rapid's replacement.

Skoda bets big on India Plans. Will be a part of the a Global Plan in Skoda's roadmap. Scope to contribute by 8-10% of Skoda's global production.

Will export cars from India, impossible to sustain if only catering to the domestic market.

All eyes on KUSHAQ, will be exported to Middle East, Africa and all ASEAN markets.

“Volkswagen Group has tasked us with this responsibility, thereby highlighting the level of trust that Volkswagen Group’s management places in the expertise of the ŠKODA team,” said ŠKODA CEO, after the Board of Management and Supervisory Board had given the project the go-ahead.
Around one and a half years ago, ŠKODA AUTO was tasked with developing a sustainable model campaign for the ŠKODA and Volkswagen brands in the Indian volume segments.

Delivering the first product after ~ < 3 years

ŠKODA's 2020 report card:

Quote:
ŠKODA AUTO can look back on a successful 2020 despite the COVID-19 pandemic. For the seventh year in a row, the manufacturer delivered more than one million vehicles worldwide. The company also upgraded its model portfolio with the new-generation OCTAVIA and expanded it to include the ENYAQ iV.

Besides India, ŠKODA is taking on additional responsibilities within the Volkswagen Group for the regions of Russia and North Africa. With the comprehensive NEXT LEVEL ŠKODA programme for the future, the Czech car manufacturer is focusing on expanding its model portfolio towards the entry-level segments, opening up new markets for further growth and engaging with diversity and sustainability in every aspect of its work. ŠKODA is also continuing its model campaign this year with the latest FABIA generation, the coupé variant of the ENYAQ iV and facelifts of the best-selling KODIAQ and KAROQ SUVs. In addition, the new OCTAVIA PRO is being launched in China and the KUSHAQ will be making its debut in India.

I guess this means one should expect the next gen Rapid (or whatever they call the all new vehicle) to easily move up by 3-4 lakh.

This is just like how the City gradually crawled up the price ladder to virtually occupy the space that was vacated by the Civic.

Skoda unlikely to bring electric cars in India anytime soon

Quote:
According to Gurpratap Boparai, Managing Director, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, the economies of electric vehicles don't work in the mass segments.

He said that to make electric cars viable for India, the battery prices need to come down to an extent that they could compete with internal combustion engine-powered cars. Boparai told that such a situation in India is required few more years to be developed.

Re: Skoda in control of VW's product development for India; car based on MQB-A0-IN platform coming

Thomas Schäfer ( Chairman Of The Board, Skoda Auto ) talks about the India plan, going forward:

- Kushaq, a car that Indian customer wants. ( addressing voice of the customer as inputs o design)

- Believe that with the current product line-up, and with the models are going to bring into the market, will materialize in terms of volumes

- Below the Mid sized SUV, can wait as these (India 2.0 models) are the priority now.

- This (hatchback) territory is a tough territory.

- Skoda could take over the IC engine development within the VW Group ( for TSI engines), as Skoda can do it maybe a little bit cheaper.

- For small cars diesels are ruled out, only TSI engines

- Electrification - Not a priority in the next 1 to 3 years, as there should be policy focus to move more towards electric mobility.

- For Volumes, other than the domestic markets cars could be exported to Middle Eat and ASEAN countries.

- Localization is the key for costs, but not everything needs to be localised. Have to rely on global value chains.

- Open to partnerships in India- Nothing as of now.

- Open to share technologies like powertrains from other OEMs, or even giving its TSI technology to other OEMs

Offering to share the TSI tech is commendable. Such low sales with such a great engine does worry everyone.

If there is ever a partnership, it will see great results. Currently, the reason for most customers(including me) avoiding VW/Skoda is the high maintenance expenses involved. When there's a partnership, this might improve.

VW group has the best turbo petrol engine in India. Tata lacks petrol engines. Tata has two wonderful platforms. They both could fill each other's gaps. Although this is absolutely unlikely to happen, there's no harm fantasizing.

Skoda and Volkswagen Group give a million euros (Rs 8.2 crore) to India to fight pandemic.

Quote:
The support will consist of medical supplies and a monetary donation to the German Red Cross. This is intended to meet as many different aid needs as possible in the crisis region. Among other things, Skoda is procuring medical equipment and materials such as oxygen generators and liquid oxygen tanks, which are necessary for inland transport. The brand’s purchasing and logistics departments are working tirelessly to acquire the relief supplies at short notice and deliver them to the crisis region as quickly as possible, despite the difficult conditions caused by the pandemic. The Indian Red Cross is expected to handle the distribution locally.
