Toyota C-HR crossover spied testing in India

Toyota’s radical-looking SUV, the C-HR, has been spied testing on the outskirts of Bangalore. Will not be launching anytime soon though.

Quote:
Heavily tipped to be part of Toyota’s future line-up, the C-HR seen here, is powered by a hybrid powertrain and is based on Toyota’s new TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform. Earmarked to make its debut in India only in 2020 or 2021, the C-HR is likely to be the second car launched here on the platform after the all-new Corolla, also expected to come powered by a hybrid powertrain.

re: Toyota C-HR crossover spied testing in India

Based on the TNGA platform; Toyota New Generation Architecture, this may be used by Toyota to counter the Compass, though the latter looks more butch, comparatively. This one looks more like an overgrown hatchback than an SUV.

Oh and I cannot help but comment that those tail lamps have such an uncanny resemblance to those on the 10th Gen Civic.

Regards,
Saket.

It could even be TNGA component testing in preparation for the Corolla. Both are TNGA-C.

Toyota test cars normally have KA42/KA41 series number which are close to their plant. KA51 Ecity RTO is close to Bosch and Continental plants. May be some component testing bu them.

Toyota has had a pretty conservative approach in India so far. I would be very surprised if they launch the CH-R here.

For them, next possible launches are the Baleno and Brezza clones, possibly the next gen Corolla and then continue to consolidate their leadership positions in the MUV segment with the Innova.

I would imagine they internally want to target a high margin, high volume product on the lines of a Creta, rather than something as radical as the CH-R.

Re: Toyota C-HR crossover spied testing in India

Agreed. Seems to be a Bosch tester.

These are the kind of cars that Toyota needs to bring here though. The Big T has a fantastic portfolio internationally, but all it launches in the mass market segments are old cars (Etios, Liva) or ones that fall behind its competitors (e.g. Yaris' engine & cabin space). Toyota really needs to bring some futuristic looking & tech-laden cars here to overhaul its image overnight.

Doesn't have much road presence, but still looks radical for sure. Toyota considering an imminent launch? Even the Yaris was caught testing without camouflage leading upto its launch.

I hope they are considering a maximum of Creta territory and not looking at taking on the Compass.

EDIT -

Fairly certain thats a hybrid synergy drive badge at the rear.

Re: Toyota C-HR crossover spied testing in India

My sense is this looks even smaller than a Creta - maybe even Brezza like in space.

I didn't quite like the rear look either. Trying too hard to look snazzy.

But I do agree they need to bring such modern products at a sensible price. Their portfolio sub 15 -20 lakh is plain disappointing.

Looks that way due to the height disadvantage. It compares (and slightly betters) Creta and SCross in every other dimension.

Dimension - CHR | Creta | SCross.
Length - 4360mm | 4270mm | 4300mm.
Width - 1795mm | 1780mm | 1785mm.
Wheelbase - 2640mm | 2590mm | 2600mm.

Height - 1565mm | 1630mm | 1585mm.

SCross struggled with the crossover image, whereas Creta with its height and boxy appeal is considered an SUV by the public. CHR is even shorter than the SCross, and sits longer and wide contributing to a more squat look - wonder if people would consider it anything more than a hatchback.

To put things into perspective - a Celerio X has the exact same height of 1565mm. Ford Freestyle is taller at 1570mm!

I had seen this in UK, in a Toyota showroom. It's as big as i20, but with C2 segment length. Considering Etios, Liva, it is too good a looking car to be launched by Toyota in India

Some pics,

Agreed with the popular opinion on the thread.
Toyota India would never launch a car like this.

Re: Toyota C-HR crossover spied testing in India

Amazingly funky looking car especially at night with the DRLs and LED lights on. Saw loads of them in Bangkok and it always stood out due to the 'origami' design.

No way Toyota will bring this to India. They are now a taxi or fleet vehicle maker in India with all products apart from the Crysta and Fortuner geared to commercial use.

Depressing situation from the world's biggest manufacturer.

Re: Toyota C-HR crossover spied testing in India

I think both Toyota and Honda missed a trick by not introducing the C-HR and HRV here respectively. Both these cars have the potential to give a serious competition to the Creta & Brezza.

Toyota CH-R on tests again, likely an Hybrid variant for the future. Will benefit the Suzuki- Toyota JV cars coming in 2020.

lol what a coincidence. That's my office front gate where it was shot from

The car is seen everyday. I didn't take any pics but the car belongs to Continental. It has nothing to do with Toyota. It's not even camouflaged.

They seem to be testing some electronics for Toyota or some other manufacturer might be bench marking the CH-R with their car. The other car which is running along with this car is the Tivoli. They are testing the engine management system for Mahindra.
