Re: Volvo XC90 plug-in hybrid to be built locally

Great news and especially important since Volvo is not going to develop new diesel engines anymore. For all the talk of EVs, hybrids make more sense for India in the shorter term. Instant availability & twice or thrice the fuel economy. I feel well-priced hybrid SUVs can partly take away the market's obsession with diesel SUVs.

The company reportedly discussed its plans to bring battery-operated vehicles to India in January 2019 when the government reduced the import duty on parts and components of electric vehicles from 15% to 10%.

Currently, the XC90 plug-in hybrid is imported as a completely built unit (CBU). It is available in 2 variants - Inscription and Excellence. The SUV is powered by a 2.0-litre, turbocharged and supercharged 4-cylinder petrol engine coupled with an electric motor. The combined output of the hybrid powertrain is 401 BHP and 640 Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission.
