Volkswagen's 1.0L TSI petrol engine to be built in India

Volkswagen To Make 1-litre TSI Engine In India Soon.

Quote:
To power this new range of cars, Volkswagen will be expanding its engine manufacturing operations and will start making the new 1-litre TSI engine in India. The 1-litre TSI engine will be available in the new SUV and will also be available in a range of new vehicles - like the possible new Vento replacement.
Quote:
The 1-litre TSI engine will be a three-cylinder unit with a turbocharger and is available in two states of tune, a 94 bhp and a 113 bhp version. Volkswagen will most likely be offering both engine options in India depending n the size of the vehicle the engine is fitted in. The engines have cast aluminium block and cylinder head with an integrated exhaust manifold. The engine also has forged connecting rods and aluminium pistons. The engines will be of the same family as the Volkswagen Group's EA211 series. The same series of engines or the same engine family is also found in the likes of the Skoda Octavia.
Quote:
Speaking on the sidelines of the Volkswagen Group announcement for its future in India, Bernhard Maier, Chairman and CEO Skoda Auto, said, "Diesel will play a decisive role but I think especially in the lower segments, we are developing extensively a whole bunch of new petrol engines and our 1-litre TSI engine is going to be one of the most efficient engines on the market and I think we will be doing a lot of investments in the future to bring these petrol engines to the same level as the popular diesel engines."
Quote:
The engines will be built alongside the diesel engines that the Volkswagen group builds in India. Currently, the 1.5-litre TDI and the 2-litre TDI engine is made in India while Volkswagen offers the likes of the new 1-litre naturally aspirated petrol, 1.2-litre TSI and 1.8-litre TSI in India.

VW’s original plan to localise the 1.5-litre EA189 diesel has been scrapped. The engine, which was at the centre of the diesel emission scandal, will be phased out once India adopts the BS-VI emission norms in April 2020.
All new cars being spoken of will have a petrol only engine. ( 1.0L TSI in various state of tunes)

Diesel will play a decisive role in the future but more for bigger cars such as the Octavia, Superb or Kodiaq.

Quote:
The carmaker does have a larger 2.0-litre diesel, but the unit would be unviable in a small car. As a result, the small cars from both VW and Skoda brands will have only a petrol engine

That's good. I hope they ditch the current 1.0 NA engine and have only the 94 BHP TSI for normal Polo and 113 BHP TSI for the GTs and Ventos. This will help economy of scale and reduce the various engine combo, instead of having 1.0, 1.2 and 1.6 engines. If this is done, then they just need basically 1 petrol and 1 diesel engine in 2 states of tune in the 10 lac rupee segment.

I hope they keep the polo GT-TSI+DSG and upgrade the 1L NA engine to a 1L TSI with manual.
Much like the Skoda, where they have 1.4TSI+Manual and 1.8TSI+DSG.
GT-TSI is a fine car.

In gearing up for the future Skoda begins testing the 1.0 TSI engine.

Testing at the outskirts of Pune Skoda has already begun testing this engine in its cars. Rumored to be on test a few VW cars too.

Owing to the newer and stricter BS-VI norms, it is a no-brainer that VW is giving its full force to make the engine comply with the latest emission norms
Quote:
Skoda claims that its new 999cc three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine is both, cost and fuel efficient and it will be built in India. This new engine belongs to the EA 211 family and is available in two states of tune – 94hp and 115hp. The latter is made available on the international version of the Audi A3 sedan. Skoda says that this new engine is more compact, lighter and has less friction which translates into a fuel-efficient and smooth driving experience. The engine will power most of VW’s and Skoda’s cars in the future.
Expect no diesel on the lower end cars from VAG.

Don't wish to be sceptical, but time and time again many articles point to the fact that real-world fuel-efficiency of these small engines are not as good as their bigger NA counterparts, under load bigger engines perform better and show very little lag on any given condition.

If smaller engines were the only way forward, then Ford's 1.0L should have been a super hit, even Maruti's Baleno RS sold very little since it offered very little over the 1.2.

This is obvious to everyone, currently demonising of diesels while there is not alternative to high mileage users. There is no way a 3 cylinder petrol is going to be as efficient as a diesel. Small petrols like this are a damp squib, especially with a 4 passengers and luggage which is how anyone uses a sedan in this country.

Not the right examples, as both these options were not priced competitively owing to high import content.

The future is going to be smaller turbocharged engines - not due to performance or market preference, but due to strict emission norms. Even Hyundai has gone public that they are developing small turbocharged petrol engines for India to meet the BS6 norms.

We might not have a choice in this matter!

The 94bhp version in particular seems to be having a very mild boost. So the driveability might not be all that bad - like in the Baleno RS for example. Ecosport produces a lot more punch from its turbo and that shows in the lack of bottom end performance too.

I wish it is 115bhp and not the 94bhp one. 94bhp woud be a downgrade for the existing C -segment VW/SKODA customers.

The 1 litre in its 115 horsepower tune will find its way into the next Polo GT, the Vento / Rapid sedans and the T-Cross mini-crossover, whereas the 94 tune will be for exclusively for the garden variety Polo and Fabia (if it's launched in India).
